  1. I keep reading people ripping a disk/DVD movie with other programs and then "shrinking" them with DVD Shrink when this very same program can also rip and compress the disk to fit onto one blank disk for burning with another program (I prefer Nero).

My question is has anyone tried to back-up an entire disk (menus & extras) just with DVD Shrink while using the Deep Scan Analysis AND how good was the quality after it was burned onto a blank recordable media disk (dvd-r/dvd-rw)?

  2. You have asked a "depends" question.
    • Depends on how big the original was. How much you need to compress.
    • Depends on how much the original was compressed.
    • Depends on what you think is quality.

For how easy it is to use, shrink does a great job. Even really long movies are good enough for me, because it is hardly any work. (Of course I Own the original dvd, so if I ever get an HD tv I could re-do)

People feel Instant Copy produces better quality for high compression. Others feel CCE is the only way to go with high compression.

    What is high compression? Depends

I suggest you use shrink to reauthor a action scene, and then compress it to different levels. This should give you an idea of what works for you. Sorry, there is really no short cut.

  3. Thanks on your insight.

When you said "re-author an action scene" for example could I do that using the open disk option and do it directly from the movie and get the results on the rip or would I have to rip the movie with Shrink then go back to compress certain parts of the movie using the files it "shrinked"?

I figured with Deep Scan Analysis a moderately long movie (2hrs) with not so many extras wouldn't lose that much quality.

  4. To get just an action scene:

    - Open Disc
    - Reauthor
    - Drag movie title to Reauthor window
    - Click Start/End
    - Set Start/End to say chapter 10/10
    - Backup with no compression (100%)

Then use this Set of files for further compression tests.

PS: I just typed this, I can not do the steps right now. If you have trouble, look thru the guides ddlooping was kind enough to create.

  5. Let me ask you could I re-author (compress to fit to one disk) the movie and menu and no extras while being able to burn it and the final disk be playable on my standalone player?

Could I do the step you just wrote about and down for example still back-up the entire movie?

There is a guide for that: https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/175347.php
You need DVDXcopy which is not free. I just drop the xtras to stills. I think the method in the guide only gets you an extra 3% on the movie after stills.

Could I do the step you just wrote about and down for example still back-up the entire movie?
You can re-author the entire movie. Will take longer to run tests. This will not have menus.

I'm not going to post any more, until you've had a chance to try some things out.

  7. Thanks. I have tried using DVD Shrink and DVD X Copy but the steps are real long and hasn't provided good results all the time. I have written to the creator of the guide to see if he can help me out. In the meantime I was wondering what was possible with DVD Shrink itself.

I really would want the entire film. I am going to manually compress the 3 parts of the movie: menus, movie and extras and then run everything through deep scan analysis and see how good the quality is on a blank recordable disk. Lots of people, I have read on here, rave about running deep scan analysis and that it enhances the quality as oppose to not running this option. It does take longer, I know, but for quality, I wouldn't have aproblem waiting longer.

The guide that you posted on the bottom is pretty good from doolooping, in cutting end credits. But thanks for clearing up some things in your last reply about re-authoring the movie and then having to sacrifice the menu (for example cutting the credits). I'm not willing to sacrifice the menu so i am going to try to do the back-up like I said above and see the results I get.

    Thanks
