Even though there are lots of slideshow programs, I would give Video Studio 7 a shot with its music tracks transition, subtitles, etc. Trialware.
    Hello.

  7. If you don't have those apps, and you want to save a few $100, Avisynth and VirtualDub are free.

    After installing the latest Avisynth
    Create a file pic.avs

    Put the following in it:

    Code:
    ImageReader("c:\myPic.jpg", 0, 1, 1, false)
    ChangeFPS(30,1001).Loop(5)
    Open it in VirtualDub.

That should make your jpg into a 29.97 fps avi that plays for 5 seconds. You can also add music.

I just typed the script. I did not test it. You need to learn a little about avisynth to use it. (Same as the other apps).
I mean it in the nicest way.

Any video editor should do it easily. If you use NTSC, then save the pictures as 720x534 or 720x540, either one will work(Premiere recomends 720x534).
Got my retirement plans all set. Looks like I only have to work another 5 years after I die........

To learn about avisynth, click on the link in your post. Read the guide "How to Edit with Avisynth" for an intro. This is an old guide so the links may not work. The download link from the tools section should get you to the right place for most new stuff.

    Beginner Guide to Avisynth:
    1. Install Avisynth (latest version)
    2. Install VirtualDub
    3. Make a text file on your desktop named "hello.avs" (no .txt at the end)
    4. put
      Code:
      Subtitle(BlankClip(),"Hello")
into the file and save it
    5. run virtualDub and open the hello.avs file using File/Open video file
    6. click on the Play button with the little I on it

    You just created a 640x480 24fps 10 second movie.

Once you get the hang of it, it's quite powerful. I have access to Vegas/Permiere/etc. But I only really play at this stuff so I never bothered to learn and use them.

But then again, I live in a shack in the woods, kill my own food, and wear homespun cloths.

Vegas is as easy as it gets - you just drag and drop whatever files you want into the video and/or audio tracks...then render once you have it all arranged the way you want it.

The pics can be any size with Vegas - even tiny little animated gif files can be made into a movie.

I have Premiere 6.0 and the latest Pro version, but find myself using Vegas for most of my projects, 'cause of how user firendly it is and it gives me the best results.

You really don't have to be a tech to figure it out, but there are many online tutorials that walk you through the basics and show how to do some neat tricks.

Adobe Premiere 5.0-6.5 is for any Windows system

Only the newest Adobe Premiere Pro is for XP.

Comparing the two, Pro sucks. I'm sticking to 6.5, thanks.
