How does this program decides what mpeg1 or mpeg2 codec to use?
For example I installed a program to edit videos: videowave, and when I read the properties the mpeg videos, it says MGI MPEG-2 Video Decoder.
What happens if I backup those moveis and later I want to read them, do I need to have that codec available?, or it's whatever is available?

Usually, it uses the Direst Show command to decode videos. Your players also have codecs that can run your MPEG videos as well.
