I could be wrong about this but in my experience with those file extention.

RAM is realmedia audio + media meaning a video with sound
RM is realmedia movie, meaning just a video with no sound
and one more that you didn't ask about but is in the same series is

RA which is realmedia audio, meaning just a sound file.

these files are made for the realmedia player videoplayer, and in my experiences most of these video files are very poor quality.

Like i said I could be wrong but i think this is the case.

    Correct.

Quality depends on the target setting
Broadband is higher quality (but still inferior) and 56k modem or less is very poor quality.

Real Media files are intended for web usage - a condensed file or stream, that you can access from websites.
Reason being, it saves on bandwidth/traffic and allowed web space for the webmasters - as well, saves download time for the person accessing the file.

These files aren't really intended to be used for any other purpose, and converting them isn't going to improve the quality.

Try renaming the file extensions for the ones that won't open in the program you're using.
If any of the files are streams, you'll need Streambox VCR suite to capture the stream, and as far as I know, it's illegal to do that...unless you have permission from the owner of the file or site you downloaded it from.

  4. Thank you for responding to my post. Do you know any software that can edit or convert a RAM file to a Mpeg or AVI. I have some movies on RAM, they look quite dark and I was fed up with RealOne Player that doesn't allow me to control the brightness (actually very little). Helix Producer 9 , also from Real, claimed that it can edit both RAM and rm files, but actually recognize only rm files. Any solution to this. Thank you in advance.

  5. In my experience RM was the video (video/audio file) and RAM was a shortcut (ie: 1kb file that linked to the video) anyways I use EO Video (www.eo-video.com) to convert RM -> MPG. I believe it may also be in the guides somewhere

  6. Thank you Smd:
My Ram files are large, not a shortcut. Software avalable convert rm files, but do not recognize Ram files. I modified the extension as suggested, but it doesn't work.
