This term is used a lot, but never defined. I've been able to convert avi and divx to svcd without ever knwoing what it meant, but I might need to know what it means if I am to encode ssrt or ssa subtitles onto a svcd also.

frameserving = FRAME SERVING and it means using a certin program
to transfer audio/video content to another program.
in most cases we use it for opening a video file that the encoder cant use
or when we want to have some functions that the encoder doesnt have.
lets take your case as an example,
you want to add subtitles to a video file, but the encoder you intend to use doesnt have that option.
so what do you do?
you open the video file with virtualdub, add the subtitles, edit what you want, and than you frameserve from virtualdub to tmpeg.

The explanations here were clear but omitted something. Why do we use frameserving?
As mentioned, maybe your encoder (TMPGEncoder for instance) does not support certain functions (like adding subtitles), and therefore the video needs to be preprocessed.
The advantage of frameserving is that the video can be processed by one software, then encoded by the second one, all in one step. How does this work? The first software (Avisynth, VirtualDub, Nandub or any soft that can do frameserve) creates a dummy handler file, and feeds that file video and audio frame by frame. The Encoder uses the handler file as input and generates a VCD/SVCD file out of it. Simple and effective. -

Go to the link for Virtualdub <- Look under the entry. The Guide is listed there with step-by-step directions.

Thx.
I was able to successfully use the virtualdub frameserving guide to encode subtitles onto a svcd using tmpgenc. Output file looked and sounded perfect. However, the file size is wayyyyyyyyy off. The estimated file size based on a 2 pass vbr at highest quality and 1875 video and 224 audio bitrates ,was supposed to be 767MB at 97 percent disk capacity of a 80minCDR. However, the encoded scvd ended up 862,000KB!!!!!
The length of the divx source is 50 min 13 seconds, and is at 23.976 fps. For audio, I used goldwave to convert from ac3 to wav and used the wav in tmpgenc. I encoded using SVCD, NTSC under tmpgenc wizard. I didin't use NTSC FIlm...wonder if that is the problem??
SInce it took over 12 hours to encode, I wonder if there is a way to better predict the output size, or if I have the settings wrong. Could the subtitles account for 100MB difference?? -
To check if your settings are off, ask yourself if the audio synch problem starts from the very beginning of the video, or somewhere in the middle? If the audio drifts more and more as the video plays, or is it the same throughout? And do not worry about having to re-encode two hours of video for every adjustment. If the synch problem is the same throughout, just encode a few minutes and then see if your adjustments were correct.
Hello. -
No audio drift at all. Everything is perfectly in sync. If I reduce the video bitrate substantially further, I will end up with vcd instead of svcd settings.
BTW, the video I am trying to encode is 1 of 2 parts. The movie is a total of over 90 minutes...this part is 50 minutes. SO I can't just up the bitrate and split teh output into 2 cdrs...or else I will end up with a total of 4 cds. -
Forgot to do this
According to bitrate viewer, the peak bitrate is 3528 and the average is 2462. That is why the file was so big. But under Tmpgenc, I set the avg bitrate ate 1875 and left the max at default...whatever it is, 2500 I think.
Does the frameserver, in this case, virtualdub, set the encoded bitrate, which appearsto be at maximum even thought I didn't set it that way in tmpgenc? -
Why is the bitrate setting in tmpgenc giving such an inaccurate file size output? I encoded a 5 minute sample without sutitles, set the bitrate for 2 pass vbr at 1700...the projected file size is 70.34 MB, but the file size comes out to 82.1 MB Encoding with subtitles using virtualdub to frameserve, using 1700 2 pass vbr again, the file size comes out to 83.3MB So the subtitles aren't the only thing that is causing the inaccurate file size...only a minor part of it.
When running the encoded samples above through virtualdub to get file information,i get avg bitrate of 2061 and 2027kbps respectively. To fit 50minutes of video onto a 80 minute cdr, the avg bitrate needs to be around 1900. I thought 2 pass vbr was supposed to keep the avg bitrate at around what I tell it to set it at? Why is it doing this?
I guess I will have to keep encoding samples, lowering the bitrates until I get the file size I want to be able to fit the entire file onto a cdr. Unless someone can tell me why the file size output is so inaccurately large??? I've encoded over a dozen avis to svcd and vcd, and this is the first time this has happened. -
Now that I know exactly what frameserving is I need to know how it applies to my problem. I have a screwed up mpeg-2 file that I want to fix/edit out all of the parts where it looks as though the frames are overlapping. also there is alot of green bars here and there throughout the movie and that sucks too. (I am positive that my Apex reads svcd.)
Can I actually edit out these parts with virtualdub? I used it to scan for bad frames, but It found none. I have asked througout the forum, and I found that frameserving to tmpgenc can solve my problem.
If anyone else can offer any suggestions, I would appreciate it. Also, I found from a helpful person that my unwatchable video has something to do with interlacing too, which makes sense because I can acually see other frames mixed into the video. Oh, and that sound! Worse that fingernail on a chalkboard!
In the meantime, I'll try to edit it, and learn as I go along until some nice person replies!
Thanks in Advance,
