  1. I have a Panasonic DMR-HS2 and want to be able to make copies of my DVD collection and record from directv.
I have tried to find the best way but have come across much confusion.
Hopefully some talented people can all post solutions here once and for all.

    1. Are there any hacks avail. ?
    2. Does a video stabilizer work ? What is the best one to use ?
    3. Any other ways to do this ?

You will need something that works with BOTH Macrovision and CGMS

I would like to add the best method to back up DVD's is with a PC DVD burner.

You get to keep the various audio tracks including 5.1 surround sound, DVD menu's, and extra features.

So you can spend $80 to $200 on a device or buy a PC DVD burner for around $150. Personally I'd go with the DVD burner.

    It's your call though.

    "record from directv" - ????

The product from FacetVideo seems to be for analog video to DVD, not DVD to DVD as in digital to digital, or is there something I missed??

The first FAQ only mentions VCR to DVD. It also says composite and Y/C ins & outs. Am I to assume that the transport form for the signal is analog within the computer from player to burner??

It works just fine going from DVD to DVD recorder. I tested my unit out just to see if it would work and it does but since I have a DVD burner I would never need to go from DVD to DVD recorder.

Copy (rip) DVD from DVD-ROM to HD. Burn from HD to DVD+/-R with PC writer

You should read little bit more on this site ....

That's what I have been doing, but you can't find everything.

OK, I still don't see what a external box with composite and Y/C connectors fits in other than viewing it on a monitor or copying to to a VCR?
If the DVD has copy protection how can it be copied within the computer and why is this external box needed?

Ripping programs like DVD Decrypter will "rip" a retail DVD to your HD and remove any copy protection as it rips. Those files can be burned to DVD-R for playback in DVD standalone.

You are mixing two different ways how DVD-Video can be copied to DVD-R.

    1. From DVD Player to DVD Recorder. For this you need BOX that removes protection. You loose quality and 5.1 sound + extras and so on.

    2. With PC from DVD-ROM to HD and from HD to DVD Burner (Writer). All you need is just software. No box. If you know how, you don't loose anything.

  12. I have bought a external dvd burner for my computer.

From what I understand right now there is no way to make a decent copy with the Panasonic DMR-HS2.
You end up losing sound quality etc.

I hate that I wasted so much money on the Panasonic.

Maybe something will come along in the future and make this mach. worth the price.

The only way I can see it being useful is if someone can find a macrovision hack.

Anyway, for now I will be burning dvd's with my computer.

  13. I don't understand why you think you "wasted" money on the DMR-HS2. I think this is the coolest device since the orignal consumer vcr came out in the '70s (yes, I'm that old.)
I have both a DVD burner for computer, and an HS2, and I love them both.
If you bought the HS2 just to copy DVD's, then yes I guess that was a waste of money.

I agree... It seems that a lot of people think that they can do that.
