  1. I have a movie that is in .divx format. And has a the divx player logo on the thumbnail of the file. Normally my divx files are actually a version of .avi. The avi's I have no problem loading up in Virtual Dub and Tmpgenc but this one neither programs supports. Also Windows media player plays all my other divx files but this one when I click on it, opens up in divx player automatically and doesn't work in windows media. So, I am wondering if there is anyway for me to convert this file to an mpeg so I can burn a vcd? My only thought was just changing the file extension to .avi and see what happens. But I don't want to do that if it may harm the movie.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Give it a try. AFAIK, it won't hurt a file to rename the extension. I've done it many times to experiment, then changed it back again without any problems. I think .divx is the default extension that the Vidomi codec puts on AVI files. You could try gspot to find out the characteristics of the file if you have any doubt. The programs you mentioned may not recognize the .divx extension but will, once you rename it .avi, be able to open it.
