I'm using 2 different capture cards rights- one for mpg/DVD, but the other is avi which I use for VCD (the mpg card gives crappy mpg-1).

If I put 'Y' cords on the output of the VCR so I can have both cards plugged in at the same time, will there be any significant signal loss / picture or audio degradation?

If the answer is yes, would the sigals still be degraded if I disable the capture that's not in use at the time?

Why don't you monitor a capture while you plug the other
    one in and out ?

That ruins the impedance match on the video cable, and
probably reduces the signal 6 Db . The AGC may fix that.
I wouldn't do it with video. I would with audio.

Yes, it will degrade the video quality regardless of which software is running. Best to plug only one in at a time, or get a switch to select one or the other.

Depends on the input video signal strength - most of the time, there is ample to spare. However, your signal won't be matched (with the corresponding mis-match losses) and you will have additional losses due to the split (best case is half power one way, and half the other, but you won't even approach this low level of loss).

Your best bet would be to build a little switch box that you can switch depending on which one you want to use.

Thanks for the replies. I had looked at a switch box yesterday, but it was $24. Since I could pick up 3 Y-cords for about $5 I was hoping to save the $19, but guess I'll look for a cheaper switch box or just pay the extra money.
