  2. Hi hellfire,

As far as I'm aware (and I have been looking for this quite extensively) the conversion from audio to midi is basically impossible (sorry to disappoint you).

An audio file contains a "mix" of all the audio information: all the instruments and the vocals. There is no way that I'm aware of in which you can separate drums, bass, guitar, keys, piano and vocals into the separate channels that a MIDI file uses.

You best shot would be to use the internet to find MIDI files that are done (manually...) by other people. There are quite a few good files around, if you look for them. A search engine I use a lot is http://www.musicrobot.com/

By the way: there is one (hellishly expensive) program that can convert a solo singing voice into MIDI, but that is basically all.

  3. you could give it a shot by using a program called amazing midi, wich will convert a wav (an mp3 can easily be converted to wav) to midi, however, im not aware of the capabilites of this program and if it will be able to do what you need exactly.

Having a rumage around on Google came up with these two trialware utils, that seem to offer the ability to convert MP3 and WAV to MIDI formats

Can't be sure how good they are as my system ain't playing MIDI through the soundcard.... but, plays MIDI from a website ??? hmmmmmmmm

    WIDI
WIDI converts digitized music into MIDI sequences. It can process polyphonic music (having many tones or voices). What takes several hours of hard work even for a well-trained musician can be done by the program in a matter of minutes

    Intelliscore
Convert MP3 to MIDI, WAVE TO MIDI converter for live performance, making MIDI files, transcribing music, and finding chord names from polyphonic MP3 and WAVE files

I've had a passing interest in this on and off, let me know how good the results are ........

There was another thread on this subject a few weeks ago, and in the end it turned out to be a wild goose chase. Some app claims to be able to convert a polyphonic, one instrument, tune from wav to midi, but that's a pretty severe limitation.
On the whole, I'd think you'd get better results trying to find the midi on the Internet...

Get good with music, get a sequencer program (hey, even pick up an old Atari ST with some sequencing softs and a cheap MIDI keyboard - there should be no end of studios still trying to get rid of these relics and do it yourself....

= s'how i make all my ring tones... going to try doing some poly ones when i can afford a poly phone... 100% unique ... guessing thats why you want this? =

One thing that can help with this, if you have trouble with following the note patterns, is a program like Cooledit that has a spectrograph display, showing the frequencies rather than the waveform. You can then take a screenshot of that (sometimes a little bit of appropriate filtering / downsampling helps), put it in a paint package, and figure out how to read it almost like a musical score. Works a treat!

Or just go hunting on the internet, bearing in mind that the quality of the files you find can vary *ENORMOUSLY* (like mp3s in the wild) so if the first one you find sounds bobbins, try again.

Back after a long time away, mainly because I now need to start making up vidcapped DVDRs for work and I haven't a clue where to start any more!
