  1. Hi guys.

i got a animation dvd and used SmartRipper, DVD2AVI, TMPGEnc to create some mpeg1 files, one episode per file. each episode is about 30 min long, but the file size is about 300MB, which is very big.

so, is there a way to reduce the size? i guess reduce the quality will reduce the size, i dont know. right now, the quality of the mpeg1 files i created is just as good as the dvd, so i dont mind reduce a bit.

    plz help. thx.

Reducing the quality is easy , I do it by accident all the time.
    300 Mb is tiny .

You rarely fail to bring a smile to my face FOO ...

    As for the question ...

I assume you used the VCD template in TMPGEnc.

A standard VCD is very low in quality. Sometimes or at least in certain respects it can look better than a VHS video but sometimes or in other certain respects it can look worse.

The VCD format already uses a rather low resolution and bitrate. You would be mostly insane to try and lower the bitrate and I don't think you can lower the resolution (at least you shouldn't try). Plus if you do mess with the bitrate setting you will end up with a MPEG-1 file that will will not be VCD compliant so chances are if you try and burn it to a CD-R in hopes of making a VCD ... well chances are it will not work as a VCD in a stand alone DVD player.

Using the standard VCD template in TMPGEnc you can fit about 80 minutes on a single 700MB 80 min CD-R so if you are encoding 30 minute animation episodes then you can fit 2 episodes per CD-R

That really isn't that bad considering how cheap CD-R discs are these days. I just saw a 100 pack advertised in BEST BUY or CompUSA for like $9.99 after instant rebate and mail in rebate.

    What more do you want?

    Less clutter?

    yup

30 minutes at 300mb must look... interesting, you could reduce it more and say it was filmed in Drunk-O Vision(tm).

A standard VCD has about 10 mins. per 100 Mb of filesize. You can reduce the bitrate thus creating an XVCD which will still play in many players. You need to "unlock" TMPGEnc in order to be able to adjust the bitrate downwards, or you need an XVCD template. Here's one.

  6. The only problem with reducing the size is that the vcd becomes non standard and most standalone dvd players do not play non standard vcd's. Now if you don't plan to play it in a dvd player, my suggestion is to go to divx and you can reduce the size greatly without losing quality.

It depends on how far you go out of standard. I haven't found one yet that won't play my vcd's encoded using VBR with 1150 Kb/s max bitrate.
