  1. I have an avi which is poor in quality. How can I improve the video quality to something better than the original? Will the various filters in Vdub and tmpg helped?
How did you guys do it?

    You can't.

You may be able to "fake" a little better quality by using smoothing/denoise and such filters but the results may be worse than the original.

I'd read up on virtualdub filters and see what's available and do small tests segments before you commit to encoding a full-length video.

    - Filter use is very dependent on each source. Choices, combinations of choices and their settings will vary from one file to the next.
    There's no place like 127.0.0.1

  3. Also the order in which you apply the filters can have a HUGE effect on the result.

So just experiment, small sections at a time. And see what works best.

Recently I got a copy of Transformers the movie in a terrible DivX rip that was entirely too blocky, I was able to get it up to a decent looking quality, if a bit unsharp by using a wide variety of filters (2d Cleaner, VHSx, tons of others) had to play with the settings and order for about 6 hours, and then the resultant AVI took over 14 hours to output.. but in my opinion it was worth it.

Animation can be 'cleaned up'. Regular movies, generally speaking, can not. Especially if they are 1 disk DivX/XviD .

Garbage In = Garbage Out , just sometimes you can do something about the smell........
