    Eat meat.

One guy says he got diarhea, a girl said someone almost died, the mainstream doctors say that they don't believe the results from their own tests but it seems that eating meat lowers bad cholesterol, raises good cholesterol, reduces total cholesterol, and does not do any harm.

And the pipple I have told to look into it and try it have all lost weight and feel so god damned good that I don't know why some are saying "I know someone who almost died from it".
You think you have those 4 pointy teeth in your head to grind grain, or to chew up lettuce. We are carnivores. We are designed to eat meat.

As far as exercise, I say no pain, no pain. I happen to work for a living, get more exercise than a brisk walk.

You say you don't want to give up the "good" stuff. What the hell is better than a good slab of meat??

    Cheers,

    George
Hey you want to eat tofu, good for you. Just get it through your head, the Japanese originators of tofu eat about a 1 square inch chunk of it, we think it should be 8 ounces or more in place of a steak. Soybeans are not legally a food GRAS, generally regarded as safe,as it was not edible before 1956, before which all foods norrmally eaten were grandfathered in. How they did this, I would have to reread

There are no shortcuts. Diet or exercise.
I hated exercise as much as you, but started anyway. Now I feel great. According to federal guidelines, I am still 60 pounds overweight, but am now in the best physical condition since I was a teenager.
    Stronger, more endurance.
Just what is this reality thing anyway?

  4. I would like to point out that, in addition to "those pointy teeth", we also have molars designed to chew up plant matter.

We are designed to eat a balanced diet. The Atkins diet is not that.

I love cycling, climbing (small) mountains and walking my dogs. If you want to lose weight, get a springer spaniel. It'll see to it that you get walked every day - my dog certainly needs two or three a day, and she's only 19 weeks old!

Basically, eat healthily. Aim for 2000 calories a day (you need 2,500 so you lose 500 cals worth of weight a day) and no more than 70g of fat a day. Believe me, with today's processed and ready-made meals it is more difficult than you'd imagine! Eat fruit, learn to cook (it's fun!) and enjoy - you'll feel better for it in a few weeks. I did.

Also, exercise. Even if you start off walking up the stairs and down again ten times, you could build up to doing the London Marathon (you never know)! There are many things to do that would help you excersice, cleaning the house is a good one!

Well, I have a double computing lecture now, so I think I'd best end my lecture here!

Good luck in losing weight! I had to, and I feel much better for it now.

Exactly, we are not carnivours, we are omnivours. One of the main reasons the human race has managed to flourish is our ability to eat just about anything.

I suppose there is no doubt that a lion, tiger, grizzly bear is an omnivore or herbivore, too.

I mean, if molars, grinding teeth are the criteria, then they definitely are.

They do all have them, you know.

I read a big article in Time magazine today. More food confusion than you can shake a stick at. Meat is mentioned, the Atkins diet included, as well as the medical establishment's shock at the results, which see above.

And what is a well balanced diet? Who determines that? If you eat this, you have to eat that and those? And if it's not well balanced, what, you get fat on 1 side?

As to calories, rhe new guideline is 13 per pound of weight, minus 250, to lose weight, 15 per pound if you are active. (I don't think most of us here are, are we?)

I think you'll lose a pound a month on that diet. Disheartening, ain't it?

Just remember if you exercise you will live 2.38 years longer. Unfortunately, you will have spent that 2.38 years exercising.

I find the results of the Atkins diet interesting. I'm in excellent shape and don't want to lose wieght, so I never tried it out. I know some people that have tried it and lost wieght on it.

I believe that if you're active enough, you can eat anything you want and not gain wieght. I workout reguarly and pretty much eat what I want without a second thought. I don't eat junk food only because I don't like it. I eat plenty of meat. I also eat a lot of pasta and breads. When I eat eggs, I use 6 of them in my omlets along with lost of ham and cheese.

I'm 5' 7", I wiegh 165 lbs(remember muscle wieghs more than fat). The last time I had my colesteral checked, it was 147, I can't remember what the good colesteral was(maybe 59?). My blood pressure is usually @ 120 over 60. My pulse rate is usually @ 61. They allways tell me that whatever I'm doing, keep doing it.

I think to many people are lazy and just don't want to do what they know will help them. This is why Obesity is such a problem in this country. To many people watch those stupid infomercial and actualy believe there is a magic pill or herb that will make them loose wieght. Well guess what, there is no shortcut in the road to fitness. If you want to play, you have to pay, it's that simple!

I can't belive I wrote all this crap, I hate writing! It's just that I take fitness seriously. If you don't want to make the comitment it takes to get in shape, then I don't feel sorry for you.

Can't blame you for that. I love good french fries, errr, American, or is it Freedom Fries. With a ton of melted cheese.

I do like meat, but eat most other foods too. I guess I could say I don't eat as much as a lot of people. Guys I work with, 300 pounders, say when they look at my lunch they get fat.

However, I might have an egg sandwich when I get to work, and my lunch, at noon, then may or may not eat anything else till next morning, unless I take one or another of my kids out to dinner.

I think I am blessed with a good metabolism. 5 ft 10, 150 pounds for the last 40 years. On the other hand, a famine hits, 3 days I'm history.

That's in addition to feeling like the bones are gonna pierce what little cushion there is on my ass when I sit on bleachers at a school soccer game.

    Cheers,

  12. The Atkins diet will help you loose weight and for some does seem to "improve" some blood parameters. But does it improve your "health" insofar as morbidity and mortality?

There's not much evidence that it does. There IS evidence that it may well be hazardous to your health if you weren't particularly healthy (i.e., fat and unfit) to being with. As I said before, your cardiovascular risk from being thin and unfit is not too different from being fat and unfit.

Humans weren't designed to eat just meat or a diet consisting of mostly meat. Otherwise, we'll have teeth like other carnivores (cats, dogs, etc.)

Wouldn't it be fair to say we were at one point, and as a result of evolution, change in diet etc. or teeth have changed and adapted to both or environment and diet?

I'm ashamed to admit I'm thinking about the atkins diet
I'm not fat, far from it, nor am I unfit, I'm 13 stone and excersise (in some form) at least three times a week yet I've developed a real unsightly gut.
Now, don't get my wrong, it's not horrendous but enough for me to take action
And no, I hardly drink so it isn't that.

  20. If you get diarrhea at first on the Atkins diet, you are getting it for a reason. You are eating less carbs and fiber that just sit in your stomach, kind of lining it. Since your stomach is no longer lined with starches or fiber or whatever else, your stomach acid is finally getting at all of the bad things that have been coated/protected/hiding for so long. Your excrement may also be very dark in color at the start of the Atkins diet.(Sorry if this stuff grosses you out) Kind of what a cleansing fast would do. After you are passed the cleansing stage, you should begin to feel more energetic. You need to drink a lot of water on this diet, cause your body needs carbs to hold water and keep you hydrated, and now you are eating less or almost no carbs. You will notice you go to bathroom often when you start this diet, cause your body can't hold the water as well. Also don't go crazy on eating meat. Like don't eat 10-2 pound steaks in one day. Extreme protein intake has been documented to sometimes cause kidney failure. That is why some doctors don't like this diet and if you have kidney problems in your family, it may not be right for you.
I am not a doctor, so go ahead and refute anything I have stated. Just some friendly vice from some articles I have read.

if it's just a theory without evidence, why do you believe in it?

    Stiltman,

Don't tell me. Your last name is Mulder, isn't it?

One thing about the Atkins diet, as Atkins himself always said, before his accidental death, you cannot eat enough meat to get fat. You eat a 3/4 to 1 pound (say a 1/2 kilo ) steak and you are sated in most cases.

You eat a big, big, big platter of pasta and half an hour later, you're starving. No satisfaction.

A lot of it probably has to do with the fact that you have to work to eat a steak, I don't care how tender and juicy it is. You have to chew it. You get the salivary juices flowing, better digestion.

Man, vegans excused, what the hell is better than the first bite of a perfectly done steak. Heavenly. No religious meaning here. Just so damn good.

Not to be scatological, but the stool color change is from the iron in the meat, turns dark to black, digested meat fluids, not blood, as all meats, bought, not self shot, are thoroughly bled.

I'd have to check the numbers but the amount of protein you get from the meat diet is not extraordinary. Especially when you consider you are not eating many pounds of it. And the protein you do get is complete protein, not what you get from a vegan diet where you have to eat beans along with your corn and other grains to get lysine, absolutely essential.

What's the old ditty, "I'm Captain Frank? of the Horse Marines/ I get my ? from corn and beans...."?

    Tgpo,

Please stay with us. Skip the creation/evolution controversy. I'd prefer to keep this discourse going.

    Will,

182 pounds for 5 foot 6, portly, for 5'10" to 6', not too bad. The gut, well, maybe you should get out from behind that desk and go into that conversion business full time. What the hell, with over 300 jobs lined up, soon you'll be able to afford a personal trainer, who will MAKE you do all those exercises you've been neglecting since you boy made you think about more than footie.

Hey, as an aside, is Andy Capp, the comic strip, big in your papers?

As to a few other things in this post, a "theory" is not speculation. A theory is the acquired knowledge of any study. Electricity is a "theory". As is the Atomic Theory.

As to omnivorism, it gave us, humans, a better chance at survival. If you CAN eat anything, you can survive a famine by eating things you would not normally.

An ape will grab a rat or snake or bird or egg or grubs or berries or fruit or roots. It will eat anything. As will any omnivore, as you might get if you watch any of those stupid "Survivor " type shows. Locusts termites and ants in Africa and the Outback in Oz. Whatever it takes. Hell, here in the 1840s, the Donner Party ate each other when they got caught in Donner Pass by snow they were too stupid to expect.

The Aztecs and Mayans practiced cannibalism in their heyday, treating it as their religious practice. Of course the "kings" got the best parts.

You DO know that a cow can't eat grass, don't you? Probably not, as even our resident Texans have admitted they live so far from suburbia that they rarely get to see the countryside. Man, we sure do live far from our roots, don't we??

Too many buttals for one post. Will wait for a fresh point to be raised.

    Cheers,

    George

Too many potatoes are bad for ya - it all turns into sugar.

You're heading right for Diabetes, and once you have that, what you eat won't be an option...it'll be a matter of life or death.

You can eat potatoes...but try not to eat that much.

Eat a variety of veggies - the more colorful, the better.

White breads also turn into sugar - consider wheat breads.

Lay off the crakers, potatos chips, chessy poofs and similar snacks.
Try eating nuts, more fruits and veggies for snacks (and I don't mean potatoes)
Crab dip - you won't miss those old snacks once you start eating crab 8)

Start drinking Green Tea - it'll help prevent Diabetes and Cancer...it's also good for your teeth and kills bad breath.

@ gmatov - meat is a very good source of Iron.
Is good for your blood and will give you more energy....but it's also a higher risk for Cancer.
Make sure you're eating veggies with your meats...and try Sea Food once in while.

I know a guy who died earlier this month from Diabetes - he refused to give up chocolate donuts, sugar powdered sweets and all that bad stuff.
He was only 42...and that's pretty sad.

Also lost a friend of the family to cancer this month.

What you eat has everything to do with your health.

Looking for a pill? B6 for energy and B12 for your blood and heart.
Salmon and Salmon oil = very good for your heart

Don't like to exercise? Try Pacing around the room...go for long walks.
Climb a tree, swim, ride a bike, rollerskate, dance...swing or play on the monkey bars

I just turned 39, and have never weighed more than 160 lbs...but Diabetes runs in my family, so I've been extra cautious about what I've been eating last few years.
It isn't always a weight issue - you gotta eat right if you want to live a long life.
    Quote Quote
  29. and u no this always intriged me..... why is the best tasting vegie (potatoes) is bad for u but the rest of them are good for u also what i am gonna try to do is just cut some carbs out..... i tried cutting them out totally b4 and tht just didnt work....... so i am gonna drink juices and stuff like that but maybe cut out my breads, pototes and chessecake.........
