Uninstall ANY packs. They are evil and corrupt. Only install separate codecs as you need them.

Get Gspot and avicodec to see which codecs your videos use, then get those only.

    Packs mess up other programs.

That may not be the cause of the problem. But you need to do it anyway.

    Good luck.

  3. my chance to agree with Gees :P

get rid of the codec pack(s), get gSpot and only get the codecs you need.

I'd go so far as to format & re-install if anyone put Nemo or K-Lite etc.. on my machine.

    cheers,
    mcdruid.

I've had a similar problem trying to move .avi files. This worked for me. Avi files (divx) can be trouble in xp. there is a fix to let xp behave much better so it's possible to move or delete large avi files. The obnoxious bug in XP that causes Explorer to read the entire contents of broken AVI files before allowing any access to them is caused by "shmedia.dll". To correct this misbehavior in Windows XP, remove the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D9 4-71B3-4b9a-9489- 5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32
This will prevent Explorer from loading shmedia.dll in response to file property queries on these files. Just an extra note, if you do a "search" for this key it will not be found, so look for it manually, it is very easy to find. As always newbie or not, if you FUBAR your registry its your own fault.
    Hope this helps.

It's a known issue in XP(1 of 1000's of known issues), and also happens in W2K. You can aleviate the problem by running in classic/non-preview mode. The problem goes away with the correct codecs installed.

Codec packs are evil, and actually break themselve upon installation. It's just someone trying to be cool by bundling up 'the latest' stuff.
