I have an (external) Sony DVD+/-RW/R/CD burner (DRX-510UL) on my 6000 series Compaq Pentium 4, 2 GHz, XP home ed. computer, 504 MB RAM, 57 GB free space. I use DVD Shrink to rip DVDs and use RecordNow DX (software came with burner) to write to Burner. I use compatible media with the burner, TDK DVD-R, 2x. I still produce about 12% coasters. The most common error is that the media is no good. I have used Sony DVD-R and have gotten that error also. I kind of think the problem is more the writing software than the media. When I am burning a disk I turn off antivirus and screen saver programs. Any thoughts or suggestions?

What KIND of external burner? USB? Firewire?

If it's FireWire, you may want to check your drivers.

If, however, it's USB - you need to be aware that USB is a TERRIBLE protocol for anything that demands a lot of system resources.

You will, in that case, REALLY need to make sure your USB drivers are up to date. There's also a lot of BIOS twiddling you may or may not have to do.

It is connected via USB 2.0.
What kind of twiddling do you recommend?
I have the latest firmware for the burner (1.0C)
    Aspi check : 4.71.2

*sigh* I was afraid of that.

Make sure everything in the BIOS looks kosher.

Then get the latest USB drivers for your motherboard. As it's a Compaq, it likely uses an Intel chipset, so go to Intel for your drivers if that's the case - Compaq lags behind.

I was hoping not to have to ask this but how can I check what motherboard I have to update from Intel's site? If I go under device manager, and open motherboard resources or system board properties they both say, Driver provider Microsoft, Driver date 07/01/2001, Driver version 5.1.2600.0. If I click on update driver, I have no updates needed. Is the mother board the same thing as a desktop board?

and hey, I appreciate your time and input.

    You... open the case.

Update the BIOS only with the one from your manufacturer, unless you're VERY BRAVE. But drivers, you can get newer ones from Intel (or SiS, if Compaq is using them now which I doubt).

Whew. I wish you lots of luck - especially with the Username you've chosen! :cD

    :c)

Oh I should have said I have the same burner and when it was early days I had no luck with any of the bundled software.

I now burn right through an authoring app. DVDWorkshop and since then no coasters. (knock wood) That's without any other changes to PC.

  9. For what's it's worth, I also use a Sony burner and have had some sporadic problems with Record Now DX with the same type of error. But using Nero 5.5 I've had No Coasters and no errors...using the same media.

Great feed back guys! Thanks! I'll see about ummm.. barrowing those apps to write with or see if I can find trial or free ware on line. The DRX-510UL also came bundled with Sonic MYDVD. That also took some fiddling to use.

With the BIOS update, now I get the same error message, Disk error.. try different disk.. is disk clean, but it has written out 100% and the DVD-Rs play in my stand alone burner. So it is progress.

It's 'cuz Nero uses the Nero driver... and RNM uses the Gear driver.

The Gear drivers is better, but requires better exclusive use of a particular resource. Because of the way that USB is set up, it has VERY LOW PRIORITY.

No fault-intolerant device should EVER be put on the USB bus if you can avoid it. Even USB 2.0. It has nothing to do with the transfer rate and everything to do with the way that Windows treats USB devices.

Basically, USB can be interrupted by virtually ANYTHING. Fine for your keyboard, mouse, or scanner. Not so good for hard drives or DVD-R's.

Ulead has trial period progs you can download. For a test and see if you can get a working disc out of it. :c)

    I think it's 30 days.

I abandoned every single program that came bundled with my burner within the first few days.

    Good luck.

Gees- I'll see about trying ULead.
Tompika- I have RecordNow DX v4.61.
MovieGeek- I did the down load to update RecordNow DX so I'll try it out soon. I'll also get some DVD+R media and try that too. My VIDEO_TS folders are often around 4.3GB. I do include an empty AUDIO_TS folder for good luck. I think people using DVD Shrink are familar with the 4.3 GB file size. I like to keep everything from the original DVD when possible.
Gurm- maybe Sonic made newer versions of RecordNow DX when they heard it called "CoasterNow" by its' users!

Very true. I do use DVD-RWs and the ironic thing is, I have had one, maybe two errors writing to a DVD-RW. Which is no big deal because because they can be erased and reused. For a while I would write first to a DVD-RW and then use "make another" to write to a DVD-R. Even that had some failures. I just want to get my failure % down super low. I keep a log of burns, what I used and what I did with my computer now. I call it the Coaster Chronicles. I know my burner loves Verbatim and TDK media and is ok with Fugi. It hates Maxell. I found that out the hard way before I checked Sony's media compatibility chart for the DRX-510UL. 8)

:cD Coaster Chronicles! I love it. Sorry if I told you something that was obvious to you. :c) You might be surprised how many do not do it that way.

Maybe you wouldn't. I do hope the Ulead stuff works for you. If only to get one working disc out and move onto something else if you want. :c)

You'll let us know, right? :c)

Oh yeah, I'll post my progress. That way others can avoid using bundled sh*tware with there new burners. I do have plenty of backed up movies. I just want to be at a 100% success rate. That sounds reasonable to me! I'll burn something early next week. Let's see, I've got an updated BIOS now, updated CoasterNow DX umm... I gotta see about trying Nero too. I think my Adaptec analog capture device came bundled with ULead so I've got that. OOoo I gotta get a few rounds of paintball in too over the weekend :P . Oh and Gees, post the obvious because some times it isn't! You are right about that. All information is appreciated!!

oh hey, you reminded me to check for the latest firmware upgrade from Sony:
    http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/dru510adwn.htm

    so now I have v1.0D. I'm sure that's better than v1.0C!

'cause you can have alot of RAM and Hard drive but it's the firmware that counts.
