Here's a good'un...
what about all these .avi files? As I understand it, if there were no PC's, there's be no AVI files, but as it is, there's 90% of the content being encoded in .AVI files.
My question is this: is there a way to go straight from 650MB.AVI to one VCD without having to either deal with two VCDs in Toast 6 or convertingtompeg[1,2,dunno which] &/or mux/demux/remux/assmux/kissmymux the audio with the FfmpegX?
It just seems like a lot to do .avi to mpg with ffmpegX (time to encode) then over to Toast (more encoding) etc. All I friggin want is these files over to ONE (S)VCD without the struggle.
side note:
1. does PC Nero burn avi to VCD?
2. what's the diff between VCD & SVCD?
there may be some duplication of questions in here from other posts, but I haven't found them yet...
Thanks,
Straif

or you can just get a dvd player capable of playing .avi files.

debatable. .avi is a good way to really compress down a movie. on mac you would see it as .mp4 not .avi but thats another storyOriginally Posted by straifer
1 vcd as in 1 vcd disk? or do you mean straight way to go from .avi to a vcd (with one or more disks?)
persoanlly i wouldnt do two encodings, seem as waste of time. If you let ffmpegx do the work, just have it build the svcd/vcd image which you can burn using toast 6 with no encoding part of toast 6.

actually ive seen this question MILLIONS to times. but to get the best answer why dont you click on GLOSSARY (in the blue button sectoion on the <------------- side of the screen. Go to V and click on VCD then go to S and click on SVCD if you still have questions let me know.2. what's the diff between VCD & SVCD?

Okay Zero, ya got me, do you work for these guys with the AVI capable players?
I've got a couple of questions:
Can it play a DVD with multiple files on it, as if it were nothing more than a large CD?
And can a region free one be gotten?
Truly supportive of avi, divx, etc, so if it plays on my machine, I can burn it and play it as is with no headaches?
If so, bloody hell, I'd be an idiot not to buy one.... -
First DivX capable DVD players played only DivX 3...Now You can buy a DVD player which playes newest DivX and XviD movies...Those with XviD option is just came out...I tryed one Xwave and it worked just fine...It plays multiple files too...Just like mp3s...You choose movie and it playes...It is 3x more expensive then the regular one..At least here in Serbia...

I do not want this to turn into an advertising thread and violate any forum rules, but our players support Divx 3, 4, 5, and Xvid with AC-3 or MP3 sound. If you want more info, just go to our site, listed in my signature and contact us from there.
To keep this thread on Topic, Galactica's post above is exactly on target.

Great, guys, thanks so much for the help.
I am worried though. The glossary says that VCD can only hold 74-80 min of video & that SVCD only does 35-60 minutes. I have monkeyed extensively with FFmpegX and noticed that the only output I can get is a .mp3 file. So,
1. CAN you fit an entire movie on a (one) SVCD or VCD disk?
2. What melarchy is required to get FFmpegX to output this "image" file for Toast you speak of?
Oh, and millions of thanks for all the great tutiledge! As soon as I'm ghettostylin' it anymore, I'll boogie right down & get that .avi DVD player! Good shite!
Thanks,
Straif
PS -- that glossary deal is the shiz! -
hmmm come to think of it the most ive seen for SVCD disk is about 54 minOriginally Posted by straifer
Anything is possible, but it may look like CRAP! remember, k/sec of the video determines (some other things also)So,
1. CAN you fit an entire movie on a (one) SVCD or VCD disk?
1. Video Quality
2. Mpeg size
3. number of cd-r's required.
increase k/sec and you increase all of these
decrease k/sec and you decrease all of these.
You can author as .bin/.cue or as XA .img these will both be acceptable by toast 6 this is found under the TOOLS tab in the Post-Processing portion2. What melarchy is required to get FFmpegX to output this "image" file for Toast you speak of?
isnt it. 8)PS -- that glossary deal is the shiz! -
IF the movie fits into the time limit allowed then yes. The max on a 800mb disk is 80min in VCD format. You can lower the resolution, but you will no longer have a VCD, you'll be making a non-standard VCD or an (X)VCD. Most players won't play these disks, but some will. One of the most popular versions of the (X)VCD is the KVCD, which allows for 120min of movie to be burned to a 80 min disk.Originally Posted by straifer

Indeed. Making a non-standards vcd could cause cataclysmic results... Mainly being your time spent in doing it.
If you want to use the KVCD profile OR use non-standard bitrates and resolutions, encode a test clip only... keep it small. i have achieved putting over 2 hours worth of MPEG1 video on a single CD-R, but the quality really reeked and i do not recommend doing that.
Hope this helps. -
Ok, so I'll just accept the fact that I'm _not_ going to get a movie onto one VCD. javascript:emoticon('

What is the accepted norm for watching burns? do you guys put multiple movies on one DVDr? what is everyone's preferred medium?
I just personally hate having to get up in the middle of the movie to change it to the other disc. Reminds me too much of LaserDiscs...

............ thats why they make 3 - 5 disk dvd changers.

no getting up required. I love mine for the SVCD function. if i do a svcd, which i have not done since getting dvd burner, it would be 3 disks. call me crazy but i want it to look good!
now i just do dvd for everything, its much easier.
i can get about 2 svcd's (of my encoding) onto a dvd
but either way, its dvd all the way for me, with svcd as a 2nd option. -

ok, so VCD vs. SVCD vs. DVDr, the quality gets better with each sequential formatting?
e.g. will I really notice a difference when I burn my 650MB .avi file to a DVDr vs. a couple of VCDs or SVCDs? (Supposing my entertainment is dolby/progressive/HDTV/hellacool)
That said, I think I already know you guys' answer, but where do you get the massive amount of DVDrs? mailorder? CompUSA sells 'em here for about 30.00 for a tenpack! ow. my ass....
and what was that someone said about more than one movie on a DVD? -
welll no. if you have a poor quality VCD and encode it to dvd the quality does not increase, its only as good as what you start wtih. Instead, its just showing you that if you start with say DVD or DV encoding to DVDr are the highest quality, next would be SVCD and then VCD.Originally Posted by straifer
again, it will only look the same as the quality of the avi. You cannot increase quality of an already poor quality source.e.g. will I really notice a difference when I burn my 650MB .avi file to a DVDr vs. a couple of VCDs or SVCDs? (Supposing my entertainment is dolby/progressive/HDTV/hellacool)
i get mine from buy.com. 2x tdk's are about 25 dollars for 10. sure you can get cheap ones, $0.80 per disk, but they will most likely only burn 1x and will propably go bad on you ie burn errors. That said, I think I already know you guys' answer, but where do you get the massive amount of DVDrs? mailorder? Hey a couple of dollars for a dvdr is great compared to what they use to cost.
anyone remember when it was more money to get a single blank dvdr than it was to buy a dvd!!!!
sure, svcd, i get about 2 movies to one dvd. take a look at my webpage, SVCD to DVD tutorial will explain one way to do it. But now sizzle is working better for me so i would do the same thing but use sizzle instead of the terminal commands.and what was that someone said about more than one movie on a DVD? -
Here I can get a 15 Pack of Verbatim DataLife Plus for $29.00. Less than $2 a piece is very good.Originally Posted by straifer

I always get Ritek or Pio (Pioneer's OEM brand) media from www.yesbuy.net or www.esbuy.com for the best prices on DVD-R media. You get ripped off in stores. Ritek has been the most compatible for me, and is available for very reasonable prices.
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté." -
Wise, given your location, you know of this one, but sad to say, Fry's has pretty good prices on blank media (of course, crap service, the cattle feeder lines, rude people, the door Nazi, etc) but when they opened one up here in Washington, I got a 50 pak of their own brand, 4x, for 38.00 as a sale item, and I have only burned one coaster so far that might well have been my own error (ffmpegX just stopped at 99% for 6 hours). Being that we're al mac types, keep an eye on dealmac.com, too.....never know what will pop up there
-
I never get house brand disks. I've tried lots of different media, and the Ritek discs are the ones that have the best price/compatibility ratio. I always check dealmac, and it's always the same sites that have the lowest prices on Ritek media.

Whenever in doubt, you can always just get Apple brand [cheaper on eBay!]
-
Ok, so lemme get this straight.
there's
Dvdr
SVCD
VCD
KSVCD
KVCD
and other shwaggy formats, too bricky to mention.
but pretty much in that order, that's where the quality is at.
now the leading (K) denotes a "non standard" format that WILL allow 120 minutes or 70 minutres on vcd or svcd respectively.
Is this pretty much right? -
Don't forget about Mini DVD and CVD
The K is only because the guy who thought of it is named kwag. So he named it after himself 'KVCD' -

are you trying to boost your post count!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Ummm, no. Just put np (no Post) because I found this post interesting and if I do a search on this forum by my name it makes it a quick and easy way to find it, should I need to acess this info in the near (or distant) future. Didn't know that I was doing something wrong?!?!?!? What the hell is a post count?
-
Could you imagine the signal to noise ratio if everyone did the same thing you did? Why don't you save a link to the thread in some folder somewhere on your HD, and avoid posting useless noise in the threads you find interesting. A post count is the number that shows up after the word "Posts:" in the user info column on the left side of each posting.Originally Posted by maleekI like systems, their application excepted.
