  1. Hi,
somehow I have sudenly goitten a mind blank on TMPGenc settings, so I am sorry if it is so simple.
I am converting a 613 MB, 1018 Kbps, 23.976 fps, 640*272 (2.21:1), XVID = XVID Mpeg-4 (taken from AVIcodec), media file to a PAL, 25 fps, 16:9 SVCD to burn, but so far after 2 attempts it has come out wrong. By that I mean, the 1st attempt came out tall and narrow. I used/specified 16:9 in the settings.
Next attempt, I used 4:3 in settings and Full screen (keep aspect ratio), but it has come out wider with black bands at the top and bottom.

Can someone please advise or point me in the right direction?

    Thanks
    Bob Heselwood

  2. just encode small 5 min section with some fat and thin people in it and test out all the possoble settings till it works.

Hint & tip when filming overweight relatives use the aspect ratio to make them look thinner than they really are!
Corned beef is now made to a higher standard than at any time in history.
The electronic components of the power part adopted a lot of Rubycons.

The easiest thing to do is to use dvd2svcd ( also does avi to svcd ). Just tick the NTSC to PAL box and select 16:9 (borders added, encoded as 4:3). It will then automatically select the best resolution for you.

    Good luck!

  4. SanderMan is right that going from NTSC to PAL, you might be better off using DVD2SVCD.

The conversion between framerates often means out-of-sync audio, playback that seems jerky etc.. but DVD2SVCD does a thorough job of the conversion.

However, TMPGEnc does a good job too.

(If your DVD player & TV set will play PAL or NTSC, which most will, it's often a good idea to just match your output to the source; if the source is NTSC film, make an NTSC film (S)VCD.)

As for the aspect ratio, try putting the Source aspect ratio to 1:1 (as it's an avi source), and then in Arrange Setting use Full Screen (keep aspect ratio).

As your source is widescreen, you will get letterboxing (black borders at top and bottom) if you're going for a standard resolution for (S)VCD in your output.

    cheers,
    mcdruid.

  5. AFAIK, SVCD does not support a DAR of 16:9, only 4:3, so 16:9 DAR will produce and XSVCD (non compliant)

When previewingf your mpeg output from TmpGenc, do not rely on the TmpGenc preview window, nor Windows media player. They do not handle DAR correctly. Use a proper DVD player software such as PowerDVD or WinDVD. One of your encodes may well have been correct!
