    Hi folks,

I recently installed the latest DivX (5.0.6 I think) codec and now i notice that output .avis from forty-two 1.5.2 now have sound even when playing in quicktime player. Does this mean I don't have to use DivX Doctor anymore? Will it play with sound on a Mac without the latest codec?

    Thanks in advance!

    Tim

doesnt necessarly imply that (at least that how i look at it) its just your settings in ffmpegx gave you an audio codex that quicktime can handle.

hey if it opens and plays in quicktime with sound all the more power to you.

if not, just use VLC or mplayer and it will have sound even without doctoring.

The newer releases from divx.com for the Mac now supposedly will let you play divx .avi files in QT without the need to doctor or validate them. You shouldn't need Divx Doctor anymore, but I'd hang onto it in case you encounter some avi files that don't work properly in QT someday.

Galactica - thanks for the reply. However I am not using ffmpegx and I already know about VLC and mplayer. Although I do occasionally use VLC, I generally play all my DivXs in Cellulo because of the playlist and configurable on-the-fly screen resizing capabilities.

WiseWeasel - thanks for the confirmation. That's roughly what I thought too (concerning retaining DivX Doctor). What I was really interested in though was whether or not these shiny new .avis will play with sound on a Mac with an older codec.

I guess what I'm really asking is:
    (1) does the new codec mean that the output DivX from forty-two is exactly the same, just that the new codec can access the hitherto inaccessible audio track; OR
    (2) does the new codec mean that the output file from forty-two is somehow different to what it used to be? (in that it's soundtrack is now 'proper' and not 'broken').

    Thanks again!

    Answer: (1)

  7. I still find divx doctor useful when playing high-res xvid/divx files on my aging G3... quicktime drops far fewer frames than VLC or mplayer, and no quicktime codec i've tried handles divx/xvid mp3 audio perfectly without the help of divx doctor

What version of MacOS X? And what's your version of Stuffit Expander?

"OS X only, no jaguar" ?? What version are you running 10.0, 10.1? Latest versions of Divx and 3vix might not be happy with older versions of OS X.

If I remember correctly (never a sure thing) you should only have Divx or 3vix codec installed. Otherwise, they interfere with each other.

My Mac OS is 10.1 and the stuffit expander is the one that come with OS.

i did download ffmpegx, but it require OS 10.2 and higher. So i didn't install it. If i get OS 10.2 or higher like panther, and install ffmpegx, would it be a problem?

One more question, how come my VLC always "unexpectedly quit" every time i click it. All i do is download it and unziped it. and then double click it. a POP-UP window say "VLC has unexpectedly quit". and then no VLC window open.

This problem happen also on Mplayer. I did managed to open it but when i drag a AVI (divx) file to the Mplayer, that it quit with the same pop-up windows stated "unexpectedly quit".

Please help me out. Thank you very much

Try updating Stuffit Expander to the latest version, as the one that came installed on MacOS 10.1 damaged applications when uncompressing archives. Also, VLC and MplayerX might not be compatible with 10.1. You might need to upgrade to 10.2 or 10.3 to use them. You should really upgrade anyways, as 10.3 runs much faster and better on the same hardware than 10.1.
