When I started making XVCDs, I simply ignored the compliance in NERO when burning. Now, I have decided to try to make the mpeg files meet the compliance and currently, this is what I have been doing in the last 2 weeks. I took some test discs with me today at Target. I always take a disc that I burned which did not meet the compliance standards in NERO and one that did. I tested out the Memorex DVD player.
It has icons on the screen similiar to the Apex and DAEWOO DVD players (such as "open" "close" "no disc". I placed the disc that did not meet the compliance standards in the Memorex and it seemed to read it fine. Then I placed the disc that did meet the compliance standards and the player was dragging on the audio and video. What? Most players do the opposite or they handle the disc fine regardless of it's compliance (Curtis Mathes, Apex, and DAEWOO). I noticed that Philips has a new DVD player out, but it wasn't on display. Oh well. Gotta keep looking.

Have you tried the XMS750 from Strathfield?
Play quite well SVCD but only with CBR, even @2700 kbs.
Doesn't work very well with VBR, no matter the rate; it skips frames.
