I've searched the forums on this but still haven't found a solution. I've done some avi captures at 720x480 and encoded them to mpeg2. converted the audio to 224kbps ac3 and run them through DVDLab to make a simple menu. I burned the dvd with CloneDVD and it plays great on every standalone I can throw it at. When I play it on a PS2 it has a sort of jitter on faster moving scenes and when its still the screen seems to flicker. I thought that maybe the field order was the problem so I swapped them and tried again but this time I knew for sure the field order was wrong so I swapped them back. Tried burning directly with DVDLab, same result. Upgraded to DVDLab 1.3 and left the "reduce jitter" option checked when compiling, still the same. Then I read somewhere about changing the frames from interlaced to progressive so I did that and it produced the worst results yet. I'm using the same dvd-r media for each burn, would use RW but PS2 won't even look at them. I've burned a copy of a store bought dvd with CloneDVD on the same media and it plays fine on the PS2. Anybody have any ideas?

Since the disc played flawlessly on your standalone, I think we can blame the Sony Black Box for this one.
The PS2 is known for being an extraordinarily bad DVD Video Player. It's software compatability is total bullshit, I wouldn't even reccomend using it to play movies, unless you absolutely had no alternative.
That's why they started to print those "Compatible with PlayStation 2" logos on the front of Retail Releases, because when the console first came out, about 7 in 10 tested titles wouldn't work. They now have a testing procedure to make sure that titles don't fall out of sync etc. The Xbox on the other hand, is excellent for DVD Video. -
True enough but what is the underlying cause of the jittery picture...the authoring softwares muxing engine? It can't be the media because a copy of a retail disc with CloneDVD plays great and I use CloneDVD to burn my compiled dvds, the ones that are jittery on the PS2, so it can't be CloneDVD. There has to be a solution to this problem, is anybody else having trouble with this, if so what are you authoring with, burning with and encoding with? Maybe if we all post what we have tried we can come up with the solution!

Look up PlayStation 2 in the DVD Player section on the left of this page. Read owner comments about what works best for them.

The Rogue Pixel: Pixels are like elephants. Every once in a while one of them will go nuts.
