I have this Jurassic Park The Lost World Collectors Edition.
When I tried to make a backup of the DVD using DVD Shrink, Decrypter, Smart Ripper, X Copy Xpress because it's starting to show scratches, all these proggy showed that the disc had so many read errors and I could not make a backup of it. Strangely enough when I played the DVD, the movie ran smoothly and nothing went wrong, not even a single thing.
Can anyone tell me why I can't backup the disc and yet when I play it everything runs normal ????![]()

Remember, let the disk decrypt itself by playing it on your DVD drive for a minute or so. Then try to run DVD Shrink.
Hello. -
You set the retry count to a higher number (99) for the hard cases
on DVDDecryptor -
Well the problem if I set retry count to 99, I get so many read errors and for one read errors, DVD Decrypter has to retry 99 times. And the read errors themselves managed to reach up to 10,000 (and this after I set my retry to 0) before I have to stop DVD decrypter.
I have tried playing the DVD for up to 5 mins but still I could not decrypt it((

I've used DVD Shrink and the trim function to snip out small bad spots on disks that wouldn't de-crypt. I can give details if you are interested, but it's kind of a pain and I wouldn't suggest trying for more than 1 or 2 bad spots.

Well try me.
Give me an explanation how to trim bad spots. I will give it a try cos I am already desperate enough that I will lose this collection if I don't back it up soon. -
why not try and re-surface the dvd with one of those scratch removal kits? They do work well and you can resurface a disc roughly up to 8-12 times. This way if you still have some deep scratches you can go over the scrathces till it's wiped out
-
I will give these scratch removal kits a try for sure.
It's just that if I can play the movie, extra features and other things smoothly why can't I back it up?
What is the difference between reading the disc to play it and to decrypt or copy it? Why do I get these read errors for decrypting when I can play it smoothly? -
it could be the eye that is reading the disk. I have had cd's with scratches on them and one player would read the scratches and skip and another player would read it fine and not skip.

Some discs with read errors can be copied using DVD Decrypter the following was posted by some one else & it works big thanks. HOW TO SORT OUT READ ERRERS DVD Decrypter is the best and only one to ignore those error. I did make copy of all error DVD without any problem. Here is the setting --- Check the FAST ERROR SKIP box, set the HARDWARE READ ERROR RETRIES to 0, set the SOFTWARE READ/WRITE ERROR RETRIES to 0, check the IGNORE READ ERRORS box.

Without getting into harry details. You basiclly decrypt with DVDdecrypter. When you start to get errors you cancel then answer "no" to delete incomplete files. Load the last VOB into virtual dub (or any program that allows frame by frame step through. Spool to the end of the VOB and note exactly where the last frame stops.
Then load the disk into DVD Shrink. This presumes obviously that it is not so damaged as to not allow the initial analysis. Most seem to work ok so not a huge worry. Go to re-author, select the program stream you want then go to the trim function. Select the nearest chapter before the bad part then move through the film until you hit the exact scene. Move carefully at this point because if you hit the bad spot DVD Shrink will lock up and you'll have to kill it from the control panel. Use the play and frame advance to get as close as you can to the bad spot and trim there.
You then load another instance of the program stream. Select the chapter just after the bad spot and scroll back to just after the bad spot. If you're lucky you can actually end up trimming out less than a second.
I've had very limited luck with the re-surfacers, really no better than a good cleaning with windex and a soft cloth that I've been able to see. If others have had better luck, I'd love to hear about the details. -
G0ld3nb0y,
I'm not sure which DVD Reader/Burner are you using to read/decrypt your DVD, but I found out that not all DVD reader/burner are made the same. I have 2 different DVD readers, and now with the new purchase Sony DRU-500, I have a 3 device that can read a DVD, and let me tell ya, I found the reader/burner combo (i.e. the Sony) is the worst. It's the most sensitive. What I mean is if the disk has a little defect (or a little bit dirty), DVDDecrypter will stop at extracting some VOB using the Sony.
On the other hand, my cheap LG Electronic DVD reader that come with the PC, read almost anything (except for some really bad or scratch DVD). In this case, then I usually use the scratch repair kit to fix it, and the LG will read it.
So, you can tell that I will:
1. Read/Decrypt using my LG
2. Author or DVDShrink it
3. Burn with the Sony
P.S. I found once DVDDecrypter goes into "retry" mode, 95% of the time your decrypting won't be successful anyway. Might as well cancel it, and apply the fix (i.e. try with different reader, or clean/repair the disk). -

I noticed that you didn't say which version of windows your running. I too had this problem with 98 Mil & 2000 the disk had all types or read errors. What I ended up doing was was updateing the adaptec dll that interfaces with the dvd reader drive. When the update was done the read erros went away on the same disk. Nothing else was changed.

Thanks!
