  1. Hi everbody,

My question might sound or actually be stupid but we say "it is not shame not to know, it is shame not to learn" in my country.

When you copy (1 to 1 or exact whatever you call ) a dvd-r to another dvd-r does the the quality of the new generation copy changes or stay the same?

My answer is "no it won't change as what are being copied are digits so as long as the same digits copied from one to another quality will stay the same". But I am also sure that there are same things that might/could affect the quality of the copy.

    Thanks for your opinions

As far as I know the quality shouldn't change if it is a 1:1 digital copy. That's the real advantage of digital media. That is also why the CD audio industry is so upset at the proliferation of CD copying.

  3. Well as long as you understand the meaning of 1:1 copy then you would not get any quality loss since everything will be copied exactly the same as the source.

Just for additional info when you are trying to back up DVDs, often you will find that original DVD size is greater than 4.7GB which means you will need 2 discs to make the exact same copy and this is as you call it as 1:1 copy (in reality for DVD often 1 original disc for 2 blank DVD discs).

Now it is a different matter if you want to fit in your original DVD which is greater than 4.7Gb into one blank DVD disc in which you will need to reduce the quality of the movie to reduce its size and this is certainly not a 1:1 copy.

  4. Thanks guys,

The message I got is that no matter the copy you have got is actually copy of a copy of a copy of a copy .... it is still exactly same as the first one.
By the way I am not concerned about dvd films but all pictures of my life.
I have all ( thousands of ) negatives digitised by photo print lab and now looking for a means of safe storage ( no not a hd I don't trust them) and a back up of that just incase.
