  1. I just got my system going a few days ago but I can't get past a continual snag. Ulead videostudio 7 came bundled with my dvd recorder (pioneer A06). My first attempt to capture from my Canon Ultura mini dv camcorder was with the VS 7 program. I went to my firewire card on my computer from my camcorder. I tried transfering a local bands performance that was 1 hr and 31 minutes. After about 45 minutes the audio was noticeably out of sync with the video, and by the end it was about by a second or so out of sync . I then tried to use DVIO with the same result. I tried to use Virtualdub and thought this might work since it is supposed to be able to lock the audio with the video. I couldn't get that to work as I don't have the proper driver, as I got a message to that effect. I was wondering if it is possible to get this driver? I have the WMD driver which is incompatible with Virtualdub.
Anyway, I have the ADVC 100 on order so that I can transfer analog sourced video. Now, there is another thread where someone asked if there was any advantage to hooking up a dv camcorder through the ADVC 100 instead of straight to a firewire card. I can understand that normally there wouldn't be an advantage, however, I am wondering if being able to maintain audio sync is one advantage that can be gained by putting my mini dv digital signal through the ADVC 100 and then to my firewire card. I sure hope that it works because I am otherwise a bit frustrated.
If anyone knows any other programs (or where I can get a driver for virtauldub) that provide synced audio, I would sure appreciate it.
I don't know if it matters but I am running WinXP home edition, a PIII 1.2G CPU, and a 120G 7200 8Mb cache hard drive. The 120G hard drive is only used for capture (and when I get far enough, editing etc). When capturing I turn off my virus program, sign out of hotmail, and while I can't seem to disable my screensaver, I set it to not come on for a couple of hours. When I captured through DVIO I didn't have any dropped frames.

I'm far from an expert but I don't understand why you would want to run a MiniDv through the ADVC-100.
The transfer of footage from a camcorder to a PC via firewire isn't capture, it's simply transferring the footage.
As I say I'm no expert but I've been doing a little research myself lately (I'm about to buy the ADVC-100 myself) and can only offer it being a software issue.
I use Pinnacle Studio to transfer MiniDV footage via firewire to my PC and it's flawless.
As you've already ordered the ADVC-100 then I guess that's your problem solved but I would have tried a trialware version of a different software program first.
Oh, and I've heard of compatibility issues with camcorders and the ADVC-100.
For example, I read (on this forum) yesterday that a member could only get his camcorder to work again via firewire if he removed the ADVC-100.
Most likely an isolated case but I guess all I'm saying is don't expect to use the camcorder via the ADVC-100 and it be trouble-free.
I hope it is of course, and I'm sure it will be
Please post back with your results.
    Good luck

  3. Yeah, I completely understand your point, that I am just transferring the digital information so I wouldn't expect any sync problems. For whatever reason there is though, and I am not quite sure how to address the problem. The one thing that occurs to me is that I capture dv type two which keeps the video and audio separate ( I would like to be able to EQ the audio etc if possible as I get more software so it seemed like a logical choice to use type 2). I have read that sound cards sometimes can cause problems so I suppose it is possible that mine is causing problems. It is disappointing to hear compatibity issues that the ADVC 100 has with camcorders (although, I don't remember reading anything about it on this or the canpopus forum). Of course, from all the problems I hear people talk about here, I tend to half expect to have some problem to overcome with any new equipment. I am hoping that it is just a matter of finding the right software to capture with.

I wouldn't worry too much about compatability issues that have gone on before you.
As you know, each system is different and a whole maze of problems can occur, each unique to its own system.
As for the possible compatability with the ADVC-100 and the camcorders, hell, if the cure is to only plug one in at a time then that's not so bad (although not too good for you as you need to run them both at once!).
Seriously, I would consider trying Pinnacle Studio 8, I wouldn't be without it (for DV).
Buying the ADVC-100 sure seems an expensive fix

I know you're looking for answers but I can't see how it can be your sound card as it's not doing any work, its just transfer of footage as you know, it's not like my ATI card where the sound card captures the audio and the video card captures the image.
I guess the quality of the footage is okay, right?

  5. Actually, the ADVC wasn't meant as fix for this problem. It was intended for transferring VHS, SHVS etc. My camcorder is a bit older so it doesn't have pass through capability for analog.

I've just re-read your initial post and seen the above, doh!
It's not an expensive (DV) fix, it's a great buy for anolgue footage!
I'll try read posts properly next time

  8. As a followup, I downloaded the trialware version of screnalyzer. It worked great! It captured the full show without any sync problems. I just have to get the payware version now so I don't get their logo popping up every few seconds in my captures. I am still going to try the camcorder through the ADVC 100 with some of these other programs just to see if it will work.

    Superb, great to hear!
