The first computer that I ever used in school was an old Apple, although I don't remember what model. I was in 6th grade and they were the cutting edge of technology. We did simple programming with the logo language.
Our first home computer was a Kaypro. It was an all in one unit, about the size of a mini-tower. A google search will bring up a lot of pages, to see what they look like. The screen was monotone green and it ran DOS something.something.
We had something after that, I don't really remember. It was a desktop from Radioshack, but I could never get it to work. It had 8-bit color, though. That was just incredible.
Then, we had no computer for years. I would just use the ones at school or type my papers the old fashioned way. Yikes!
I think it was in 94, or whatever the year was the girst generation PowerPCs came out. I had one of those 66Mhz speed demons. It was the best.
Then, I inherited the old shop accounting computer in 97, which was a 266Mhz HP Pavillion. I had that for two years.
I had an industrial accident at work, and received a work comp settlement of about $10,000. I saved most of the money at the time, but spent $2,000 on my own home built system. It was a 1.1Ghz T-bird based machine, which I had until a year ago.
My current machine is what I built after that, which is in my computer profile above. I harvested most of the parts from my T-bird machine and added a new hard drive. I'll stick with this for a while, unless I cut off another finger. -
Horrible PackardBell SX 50.

AMD 66mhz
AMD DX4 120mhz.

To a Celeron 700mhz.
to a PIII 1ghz.

I also have an imac 450. -
Let's see...

Commodore 64 ($400?, 64 colors?, 5 1/4" floppy, RBG monitor, 2400 modem)
Amiga 1000 (HD!, MO 230Meg optical drive, RGB monitor, 11.6K modem)
Amiga 2000 (Same as above)
MAC 7200 (Upgraded MB, SCSI CD burner)
MAC G4 733 (stll use for surfing, email. Programs to expensive)

Homebuilt AMD Duron 900
Homebuildt AMD 1800xp
Homebuilt AMD 2400xp Barton, 1GB, 60GB boot, 160GB Raid for Video, Cable modem, etc.
Funny thing is, what I paid for my first two computers, as pathetic as they were, is less than I paid for my present system that is about a thousand times faster. I still have most of those old machines, except I sold off the VIC20 and the C64. -

galactica,
I really like my MAC, but when I upgraded to X, I have to run my older version of Wordperfect in classic mode. I have went to newer versions of Eudora and GraphicConverter and I use these extensivly. I was lured to the dark side (Microsoft) by the necessity to work with their machines at my job. Then when I discovered video, DVD, SVCD and such, the Microsoft machines just had better or more available software. The final straw was when I found an external DVD wouldn't work with my machine. I have spent the last 3 years learning the Microsoft system and it's not that I prefer it, I just need to use it most of the time. I have access to Word, Photoshop, and other highpriced Microsoft format programs through work, but no access to their MAC equivalent. -
yea, a LOT of mac users were sort of pissed about that. I remember the days I ran classic all the time because like you none of my word processing, creative apps etc would work!
now I dont even have OS9 on my machine any more.
to each is own. It's good to hear that you still use it and didn't abandon it totally.
I also have a PC and use it often (more so now since my wife is always on the mac! RAH! guess ill have to get a G5 for me)
btw, last I looked difference between MS OFFICE XP Standard and MS Office X was only about 10 dollars. But i know what you mean about "access" -
