I just ripped a couple cells from 2 fast 2 furious to test SVCD on my dvd player as iv enever burned one before only VCDS. I looked up the resolution/bitrate for SVCD which seems to be 480x480 @ 2600 bitrate.
So i ripped with smartripper, framserved with dvd2avi, made mpeg2 with tmpgenc plus (SuperVCD (VBR)) was the only setting for svcd i saw. changed output res and bitrates etc etc.
When i play back mpeg on pc it plays fine except i notice what seems to be "scanlines" horiontally...
on the DVD player it has great quality, dvd-ish. however it is jerky, frame rate seems fine, image quality is great. but the jerky playback makes it unwatchable. is it the 2600 bitrate? the fact tmpgenc setting was Super Video CD VBR and the bitrate was 2600 CBR ? would 2 pass VBR fix it? Ive always used VCD settings and CBR 1150 bitrates.. which worked fine but the quality isnt on par with SVCD/DVD. can anyone help? angreal19@Hotmail.com.

I don't make SVCDs, but if it sounds like possibly the wrong field order(top vs. bottom first).
(above is for "jerky" when motion is not smooth - not a stop/go kind - don't know which you meant by "jerky".)
Those "scan lines" are just interlacing and should not show on the PC using PowerDVD or WinDVD. I always check video there first before authoring.
If they're on the source they are meant to be kept - for viewing on TV.
Hope some of that helps. There's no place like 127.0.0.1

Try lowering the bitrate a little bit to 2400, you're at the SVCD maximum right now. Other things to try: burn at a lower speed or try some different disks.

Probably bitrate. But I cant test because my norcent just died..returning it now. It started showing mpeg blockiness for no reason after playing vcds flawlessly for months. The discs arent scratched or smudged its the player, does it with every disc. But not DVDs. Very strange....

In case anyone cares, it was the bitrate. I tried making another SVCD with 2400 bitrate instead of 2600 and it played fine in the Samsung DV230 i replaced the Norcent DP-300 with (the norcent died for unknown reasons). I just took the shitshung (heh) back and got a JVC that plays EVERYTHING but mpeg4. even xsvcds! its awesome-ness.
anyway, just a tip 2600 = bad. the tmpgenc plus svcd template uses 2520 or something.. so you must be able to go higher than 2400. however, a warning, and i am a newbie to svcds, however i suspect possibly the 2600 bitrate killed my norcent...it worked flawlessly. however it could also be the drywall dust from renovations.
Anyway good luck , hope this helps someone... -
These Chinese decks are the cheapest build items on Earth. Unlikely it's the bitrate that killed the machine but since they also have no vent holes, heat build-up is a problem. My friend's 300 plays my Dishplayer HDD rips. Those are 544 X 480 Mpeg-2 at 15 MBPs! So, it's not the bitrate...

Well 2600 played on neither the DP-300 or the Samsung DV-230. However, both played the same clip at 2400 bitrate instead of 2600. Otherwise exact settings.

i have one and have purchased 4 others for family members of the dp-300 and they all play files over 3000 bitrates on svcd format and any other cd i have put in it, on all types of cds, i have had mine and theres for almost a year and i have never had a disk it wouldnt play. i know these are the golden versions but did they should be simular.
i would say you would get better quality by useing the 2pass, expecially any action movies.
you can make your own templates as well so you dont have to change all the settings every time. i usally just change the average bitrate and custom the video to keep aspect close.
i use fit-cd ( get it free here http://shh.dvdboard.de/ ) to get aspect and average bitrate. i use 3000 max / 1200 min / and average set by fit-cd (again as it will be said some players have issues with files burnt over the max of 2520 video , i just dont see it would be with a norcent dp-300.
if your starting out tmpg's wisard is a good place to start playing around,
open tmpg> close wisard > click load (bottom right) > find and load svcd template .
now click load > in the extra folder ,find and load >unlock .
this will now unlock all the settings of the svcd template so you can change some settings
now click settings tab at the bottom and you can change settings
like...
video tab > dc componet presision from 8 to 10
cbr to 2 pass > now click settng (beside) 2 pass >increase min to 1200 and check autopadding (have had problems with files going over 900mb when i put into vcdeasy . keeps saying this file need to be autopadded do you want to do this now) (i know its a multiplexing problem, but this seems to delete the problem all together)
increase buffer size if wanted?
change the > motion search presicion from fast to high quality slow or best quality slowest.
advanced tab > changed video arranged method to custom and set frame size that fit-cd said to keep aspect ratio close
gop stuckture tab > change to closed gop and output header every 1 gop
now click ok and on the bottom right click > save ... save and my.svcd.2.pass.ntsc.mcf
.........
now click file at the top left and > open project wisard you will now see your template there for you to select...
you can download many pre-made templates (here https://www.videohelp.com/tools#VideoEncodersTemplates )
best thing to do is play with the settings and use small 5 min clips of about 2mins leading up to an action scene (so you get most action shots) and see what they all change the quality of the encode. when you find what works for you or looks best use thoughs settings.
audio (some will say is bad but i dont care) changed to 160 ( gives more bitrate to video and i cant tell the diffrence in the audio, its played in many types of dvd players i have tried on not just the dp-300
tmpg is a really good program to start to learn on and the cost is min.
you could go with cce but the cost and dificulty at first would multiply greatly.
personally i think the norcet kp-300 are great, and for the price unbelivable. no overheating problems here or at friends places ever.
you can get more info on the dp-300 over at http://www.nerd-out.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=35
hope anyoff this helped ? -
I have TMPGencPlus VCDEasy FitCD some other bitrate calc too DVD2AVI smartripper...etc etc. im sure i have what i need. Now here's the thing...
I was playing with animatrix, final flight of the osiris, i ripped that and encoded about 2 minutes, as you know its both smooth and fast action so i thought it would be perfect for testing purposes. Now i used tmp's template the first time and it came out jerky. so i decided on this try id do it myself so i set bitrate to 2400 and CBR, and the normal settings i always used for VCD, except the obvious i changed the main ones to svcd..
and guess what, it plays perfectly. only problem is with CBR it wouldnt fit on a cd at 2400 bitrate, i want to keep average length movies to 2 cds like i did with VCD, and 2+ hour ones to 3.
So lastnight i spend 8 hours encoding 2 Fast 2 Furious by following some guide i forget, if its important to you ill get a url but i went through calculation and it made me use 2 pass VBR and non interlaced video in tmp.. average was 1696 according to fitcd, max/min was 2521/1149. and 29.97 fps according to DVD2AVI. although that part confused me, it says 29.97 FPS but it also says FILM under it.. and its my understanding that NTSCFilm is 23.x (24) fps...so is that what is causing the jerky playback? was it fluke that animatrix was at 29 and really this movie shouldve been 24? im not sure but id like to know. All the VCD's i made have been 29 and they played fine.. -
Oh by the way, im now using a JVC XV-N44 which plays everything.. VCD, SVCD, XVCD, XSVCD, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW....you get the idea. *edit* - However I still need to figure out why it played jerky.
