Whenever I try to convert a 16:9 .AVI to SVCD with TMPGEnc, the aspect ratio always ends up screwed up. When I play the final output either in Windows or on my DVD player the image is too tall, like playing an anamorphic DVD in non-anamorphic playback. I've tried playing with the aspect ratio settings in TMPGEnc but nothing seems to help. Can anyone tell me exactly which settings I should be using, and/or is there a way to set a flag on the final output which would tell the DVD player to treat the video as anamorphic so it would correct the aspect ratio?

    Thanks in advance!

  2. I use the wizard and keep all the settings on default, unless I know I need it changed. Then in settings, 2nd tab, It should say "fullscreen" by default most likely. I use the "fullscreen (keep aspect ratio)" settings. Someone said they liked 2 more so I use it and I like it. Try making a few seconds of video with those settings and see if its what you want.

There's an ongoing debate about whether 16:9 is in the
SVCD spec., as yet unresolved. It has been claimed
that players treat it different from DVDs.

I made a test case and just played it with Power DVD and it behaved
as expected. The player letterboxed it because the window was 4:3
I need to make a real SVCD and stick it in the player.

What is the resolution of your AVI source and if you play it
like that does it look all right ?

The source AVI is 576x336, and looks fine when played on the PC. I'm now thinking that the resize to 480x480 is what messes up the aspect ratio. Although on a couple of occasions I've transcoded to SVCD and when I played the final disk with PowerDVD the image was properly displayed, but the same disk gave a stretched image on my standalone player. I'll try a few of the suggestions here and see if I can get a better result. Thanks for the help!

Ah, ok. Looks like the "fullscreen (keep aspect ratio)" setting fixes my problem. I must have tried ever setting EXCEPT that one. Duh. Well, once again, thanks a lot!
