I was browsing ebay and found some that werent that bad. Including shipping, I found some I could've bought for 25 bucks...but I didnt know how much music I could store in a 128 MB player. Approximately, how many minutes can I fit into a:

    128 MB player?
    64 MB player?
    32 MB player?

What do you think? Waste of money? Should I just stick with the good old CD player?

128MB with songs encoded at 128kbs you'll get about 2hours according to a website on the net.

  4. This summer I bought a brand new iPod. I will have to say, this thing is absolutley amazing. I love it so much. I can work out with it, ride my bike with it, and I even hook it up to my car wherever I go. (ran an extra set of RCA cables to my amps so it sounds awesome. Bought an audio switch box that controls where your source is coming from. That way I can switch between the iPod and my deck unit).

Now you know why I don't have any money for a camera and sound system Devanshu.......I spent it all on my iPod. hehehehe

They really are great though. If you love music as much as I do it is one of the best investments around.

Through educational discounts you can get an iPod for $269 which has 10GB of free space. Roughly 2,500 songs. You can also put files on it, install an OS, boot off of it, calander, games, notes, address book.

I'm too poor to buy something that expensive right now...

  11. I meant how fast is it, saying that you could boot an OS off of it I think its speed would be something to look at.

I've searched, but I can't find that the drive speed of the iPod is.

  13. I thought I read on one of the iPod forums while determining whether to buy one last year and some of the gurus were saying that they use a hard drive that can be found in some of the Toshiba notebooks. Which ever drive that is.

That is all I can remember. I searched through ipodloung.com again and couldn't find any specs so who knows.

  14. Well I found some specs from the first and second generation on this site.

    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/consumer_electronics/stats/ipod.html

    (lots of other specs too)

Towards the bottom on the big chart it says those used to us a Toshiba 4300rpm GB ATA-5 drive.

Since I read that the current iPods use the same drive then I suspect its the Toshiba.

    Hope this helps.

Its the same as an external Firewire HD.
I have the 20 gig iPod and it will boot my G4 about the same speed as my internal IDE.

In school i would have a lite version of OSX on it because the school macs had OSX but privlidges were limited (ie couldnt install a thing)
so booting off my iPod made me able to be admin of the comptuer and i could do whatever i wanted

now i just use it for my musical enjoyment and as a portable HD between my desktop and powerbook.

I love the thing, and its rarely ever not in use

Here's a 2nd generation 10 gig for CHEAP on ebay!!

As much as I hate to suggest it....
Archos Jukebox Studio 10 or 20. You can often find them for about $125 and up on sale after rebates. The 10 has a 10GB drive, the 20 a 20GB drive. Best thing about it is that it takes AA batteries, so you can buy as many sets of NiMh batteries as you want for $10 a set.
    Limiting factors...

    - Slow USB1 interface, and I mean slow
    - Max bitrate 192, NO VBR! It will play higher and VBR, but you won't be happy!
    - NEED something that can format FAT32 to use this machine, it often needs you to refamt to put the file system back in order.
    - If you hold it wrong while pushing the buttons, you can bend the case and make it touch the bottom of the drive. This causes a disk error.
    - If you subject it too constant vibrations, it will cause a disk error. This includes riding on the dashboard of your car.

It does have open source firmware (Rock BOX), but I didn't like the current display options. You will also need to format and upgrade the firmware first thing. They comes new with 5.08, but the same thing from Archos is 5.07 and it works better.

The iPod is the best, the problem with that is in order to get the best you have to pay the highest price.

the upshot is iTunes for the PC comes out soon. (Oct 16th I what I'm hearing) and you need an ipod to transfer music you purchase around unless your just going to burn to CDs. I understand why, it helps apple sale iPods. But its kinda sad that all the other MP3 players are left out. Don't get me wrong. Other MP3 Players work with iTunes just not with the files from the music store.

i just got back from best buy, i saw some portable cd players that were able to play mp3 burned cdr's were talking really decent prices, and you could hold 700 megs of songs on a disk so thats not too bad.

since your money is limited, perhaps you should look into one of these, i say one for 50$ and it included everything you could ever want (car kit) and more!

You could always look on Ebay too. I've seen the old Archos Pukeboxes going for pretty cheap.

I was checking out some things, and stumbled onto this player. I don't know anything about it except it is cheap for a 10GB player.

Tiger is one of those places that you have to know what you are getting, before you order it. Lots of refurbs/remanufactured, and pulls. Refurbs aren't so bad when they tell you that is why the price is so cheap, and they always (I think) tell you when the item is a pull. CPU's are all new except when included in something that is a pull, memory should be the same way. They also do a lot of discountinued overstock items that they buy for almost nothing. I have dealt with them a few times, and once I learned the tricks, didn't really have any more concerns.

  25. I just put an RCA Lyra 128Mb in layaway. Under $100.
They claim 4 hours on 128Mb if you use MP3Pro.
Just what is this reality thing anyway?
