  1. Noise
Irrelevant, meaningless, or erroneous information added to a signal by the recording or transmission medium or by an encoding/decoding process. An advantage of digital formats over analog formats is that noise can be completely eliminated (although new noise may be introduced by compression).
ok. what is the disadvantage of noise? did "they" during naming this, realize how confusing the name is when it deals with an image? how is it eliminated and what is the benifit?

  2. Noise hurts compressablity. It does give it a film effect though. If noise is added during playback (not encoded to the video), then it can hide compression artifacts. You can remove noise to increase compressability and decrease encoding artifacts by using Spatial and Tempral Smoothers. TMPGEnc has a built in noise reduction filter, and there are several filters for VirtualDub and AviSynth. Check out http://neuron2.net/index.html
