Newbie questions

Hi all, I am attempting to copy my old VHS videos to CD, please can you help with the following ...

I am using Adaptec VideOH box, and have managed to get the films off my camcorder onto my pc as AVI files. Burning these as VCD is no problem, but the first question I have is:- Should I instead go for SVCD? From reading stuff on here my presumption is that SVCD will be as easy to manipulate onto CD as VCD, is that correct? In which case, maybe I should discard my VCD plans completely and head for SVCD?

Next question:- I now need to get the films off my VCR. My VCR does not have RCA outputs, just Scart sockets. I know that you can buy a Scart-RCA convertor cable, but need to ask if ALL Scart sockets are in fact enable to supply an output signal? I do not want to go and buy a cable only to find that my VCR scarts do not offer an output signal. any advice on this?

AFAIK scart sockets should have all pins necessary for video input and video output enabled .

SVCD is higher quality, but would fit less video per disc. You could experiment with both ways and see which you like best.

Also, your player may not like them as much as VCD, so you could look up your player in advance - in the PLAYER section and see what success others have had with both.

MPEG 1 is for vcd - quality is ok
MPEG 2 is svcd or dvd - higher quality go for this but it will take up more cd's for your film.

You can buy a scart lead which then splits into audio left, right and video. I am not sure what they are called but someone else will fill in the gaps. All scart sockets can output.

Thanks guys. My Scarts are Euro - if that makes any difference?

As for DVD player for the SVCD - not really an issue as I don't currentl have a player so will be buying one to suit when I eventually get the stuff onto CD.


So ...whats best (easiest?) tool for converting my AVI's to SVCD?

The adapter I have has a scart on one side and the composite 'sockets' on the other (yellow for video and white and red for audio), but more importantly it has a switch for input and output.
Obviously you'd set it to output
