augh! burned movie endings are cut off

this is a very frustrating problem. I've been able to rip and backup several dvd's previously but i've recently run into problems. basically burning the movie only, the last couple minutes of the movie are are clipped. what size can movie files be up to. 4.7gb for data but what is the max size for movie files on a dvd+r disk?

i've been using dvd decrypter to rip, either dvd2one 1.22 or dvdshrink 3 beta5 to compress and copytodvd 2.0 to burn. With dvd2one, i use the 'movie only' option, make sure its dvd+r(w), movie only mode, variable compression to successfully rip the movie. but repeated burning has resulted in the full movie not being burned even tho i can watch the whole move on my HD. with dvd2one, should i enter a specific size for the dvd?? I've tried (defualt 4472), 4400, 4300 and even 4200mb sizes and these will allow the a bit more of the move but I'm still not getting the entire thing.

with dvdshrink, I've compressed everything down except the movie and allowed it to automatically compress the film down (4.6gb), even re-authored with the movie only option and it saves to Hd fine.

so is the problem with copytodvd? can someone tell me where i can set what size the dvd medium should be here? what settings should i have checked or unchecked? should i set the write speed from max to lower? does speed matter? this problem is occuring with Bullworth and Spirited Away dvds (and has happened with others). my burner is a phillips 228 hooked up to a p3 running win98se , w/512 ram and 60 and 80gb HDs. this problem is occuring with 2 dvd+rw media: phillips and memorex. both media are clipping off the endings.

max size for movie files on a dvd+r disk?

Max is 4.38, but many stay below this to avoid potential problems towards the end.

What media are you using? Losing the end of the movie is a common symptom of bad media. Anything over 4000 is gonna be problematic on bad media.

99% sure it's bad media. Doesn't matter what you paid for it, the seems at the edge are bad and you are losing 3%-7% of you capacity. Do a project at 4 GB and your fine.

How many posts do you see on here where people are having issues because of media? They get the GREAT deal of 100 DVD-R for $.04 each and then post on here when their backups are crap and wonder why.

Look folks, in the world of technology you almost certainly get what you pay for. If you pay $.04 for a blank DVD-R then you are getting a four cent disc. RitekG04's are around $1.00 a piece for a reason...they are better...Pioneer discs are more expensive...why...because they are better.

your problem is almost certainly media. Most burning programs will not allow you to over burn or burn a file too big to fit on the DVD-R. So if it is all on the disc your problem is almost certainly the disc.

I might of had a similar problem.
When I burnt to my DVD+RW(Memorex I think) the last few minutes of the movie(information near the end of the disk) would lock up on my DVD player, even though it played fine in my computer.

When I copied it to my DVD-R(Verbatim), the movie played fine all they to the end. I also tested on multiple movies to confirm.
Could be more of an issue of the DVD player being able to read the full data range of RW disks.

the two media i've been using for test dvds are the single phillips dvd+rw that came with my drive and a single memorex dvd+rw disc that i have free right now. would u all suggest i try another one of the memorex rw disks that i bought in a 3pack? i have ripped and burned other movies (original sin, resident evil, janet - aloha from hawaii) with no trouble and contained the entire movie with menu and extras no problems. should i buy a new set of memorex or try another brand?

for size limitation, some say 4.38 gb some say 4.0gb (geez thats a huge loss of space from a 4.7gb disc!). how do u tell dvdshrink to limit the size of movie u are ripping. it always automatically tries to fit it into a 4.6gb space.

No no.

The discs aren't REALLY 4.7GB, they're 4.7 BILLION bytes.

They're only 4.38 GB. Media manufacturers are allowed to use a different size gigabyte from the rest of us.

i had a similar problem until someone on this forum suggested limiting the film to 4.20 gb instead of 4.38 gb when using copytodvd to burn. I tried it and it worked. In version 3 beta 5 of dvd shrink, all u have to do is click on "ratio"(I think that is what it is called) and click down until it reaches 4.2 gb. Didn't make much difference on the quality of the film.
Also, copytodvd has probelms with dvd-rw, It only burned the first 50 mins of the film ok, after that it began skipping and after that became unreadable by my dvd player.
dvd-r works perfectly as long as the film is no longer that 4.2 gb.

One other thing, I don't think that it is the media. I use datawrite x4 red dvd-r which is very good and have used it many times with decryptor and have copied upto 4.6 gb with no problem. It is a problem with copytodvd.

You could also change the Target Size setting in DVD SHrink.
"Edit >> Preferences >> Target Size >> Custom".
