  1. what app can be used to make screen shots of a DVD while playing or paused on a Mac? I do like to make wallpapers of various enchanting young ladies that I can't find elsewhere, and cpaturing a few nice shots from a movie would be the easiest way to start, but apparently screen capture doesn't work while a DVD is playing.
    any pointers?

Or, you can use the freeware Capture Me, advertised to work with DVD screenshots.
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté."

or you can just use the built in screen capture in OSX i believe default is command 3 to get it to take an entire screen shot. problem is, default is a .pdf file not a .jpg file

depends on what you want, but if you just want a great screen capture app use SnapzProX

it came bundled on my computer, so maybe it is also on yours?

The screen capture capability in OS X won't let you capture while Apple DVD Player is running. It'll do it if you're playing video through other software.

If you use the screen capture capability in OS X, it will make a PDF, as galactica said. If you have access to a full-featured PDF software such as Adobe Acrobat, you can extract the image from the PDF as a JPEG or TIFF file.

Since Apple DVD Player will not let you take a screen capture with your normal Key commands Command+Shift+3 or 4 then you can access the built in screen capture through the command line. Just type in screencapture in the terminal and you will see the available options.

The fact that is goes to .pdf if NOT a problem. That is one of the BETTER features of OS X.

However, the Apple screen capture diliberately does NOT take snap shots of the DVD viewer.

DVD capture is the FREE way to go.

You don't even need Adobe Acrobat to do this. All you need is the Preview app that comes free with OS X. Just open up the PDF with Preview and choose the "Export..." command. You can then save it as JPEG, Photoshop, TIFF, PICT, etc.

Exactly, just as I suggested earlier. You shouldn't have to muck around in the Terminal to take a simple screenshot!

doesn't SnapzProX come bundled on macs these days?
I know it came with mine, but I dont know when they started adding this.

anyway, its a great app, but I suppose its shareware, so just go with the free one.

    free is good

I have Snapz Pro X 1.0.6 and it came bundled with my Mac. Only version 1.0.6 is bundled. The makers of Snapz Pro X said that version 1.0.7 and above will not be bundled.

  12. I just play the DVD through VLC, set to full screen, and do a standard screenshot. Useful for making menu backgrounds

    I second Capture Me.
It works wondefully, is FREE, and it's capture window can be sized
to capture just the pic you want, without any extra background crap
that you later have to edit in Photoshop, Graphic Converter, etc.
It will also let you, when prompted at save, save the image as tiff, jpg,
or pict, bypassing OSX's default of saving everything PDF.

incidentally, Apple's default capture save to PDF, can be opened
directly into Photoshop or some other imaging program,
that recogizes PDF Touch UP Images, which are Acrobat's
fancy way of saying " an image in a PDF format wrapper".
The OSX captured images ARE NOT true PDF files, but are actually
    Acrobat Touch Up Images.
This was discussed on Adobe's Website as of late.

and Galactica, the Screen capture utility Snapz Pro X came bundled with
Jaguar ( at least that's the first place I got it), but the version bundled
with Jaguar ( 10.6) will disable itself after 45 days of use, and the only
way to get it back, without paying for it of course, is to re-install Jag,
or use Pacifist to re-install it.
