There are some knowledgeable pipple here on the PS2.

How can I get one repaired, out of warranty? My grandaughter says hers has lost its laser (accurate or not,I don't know, yet) and her mother says she has checked to see the cost of repairs (my 11 year old g'daughter, mind you so she might not have heard properly) and replacing the laser assembly would be 300 bucks. Now, admittedly, it was 300 when they bought it, but dropped to 200 not long after.

Is there a reccommended repair site that is reasonable, or are repair parts not available at all?

    Thanks,

    George

Out of warranty? Open it up and see if it ues a normal IDE based drive, then replace with the required unit. If not, then I have no suggests for you.
Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they?

    I repair them

You can maybe clean or adjust the laser but a new laser would be a better bet though

I also install lasers in ps2s
    www.foundmy.com
    www.the-console-corner.com
    www.richspsxparts.com

All these places sell lasers for ps2 there are other out there average price is $70-80 plus shipping

    I charge $25 to install a laser

Cost plus shipping back and forth would probably be about $150

Also you might want call sony yourself and see what the out of warranty charge for repairs the last time I checked it was $100 flat rate for a replacement unit if yours is unrepairable + shipping back and forth but Its been a while.

    Another Alternative
you might want to consider selling it as a broken ps2 on ebay you can ususally get $40-60 for them and buy another ps2 at $179.99 the big rumor is that they wil drop to $149.99 before the years end but we'll see time will tell on that one.

    Hope that helps

    Oh yeah!!!!

    I just remembered

If you live near an electronic boutique (EBworld) videogame store
They are offering a replacement ps2 for $99 if you have a broken one plan right now (I saw it yesterday)!!!!!

This is probably your best choice no waiting or shippings costs

    Hope this helps

For $99 bucks it would be worth it. Those are very likely to be factory refurbs, but maybe just used. Wonder what they would do if you bring in an empty PS2 case for a trade, it really doesn't work Wish they would trade that for an original Play Station.

  7. the ps2 dvd-rom is not a normal dvd-rom

even at around $100, its still not worth it to have your laser replaced. espcicially if you're getting a refurb and have to pay for shipping/installation..

the older model ps2's had crappy lasers in them that went out freqently, v7+ ps2's have much better lasers in them.

my suggestion would be to try to find a laser lens cleaner (or something that is suggeted for the ps2).. if that doesnt work, buy a new ps2 (they're down to $180)

take apart your old ps2, sell the parts on ebay.. you can even sell the dvd-rom, just make sure you tell'em the laser is no good, but the tray and the rest of it are.

you could get pretty good money.

    ps2 mobo
    reset/eject cable
    power supply
    power swtich
    controller port
    dvd assembly (bad laser)
    fan
    case

Like you said you can definitely get more money by parting it out on ebay

Also at www.foundmy.com the lasers are new lasers I dont know about the ones from richs's or the console corner though.

But for $99 for the trade in @EB you cant beat it
(not for sure if you could buy the extended warranty with those but you can noramaly buy them with the refurbishd models and if you have any problem you can take it back within a year)

    PS2Daddy,

Thanks for the links. Checked them, found the one with a forum and an adjustment technique, and though I build my own 'puters, don't know if, at my age, I'm up to adjusting one after install.

First, I don't even know if the laser ass'y is bad, haven't even looked at it, will this weekend.

Second, is it posible the lens needs cleaned? I'll try a shot of canned air, then maybe a cottonswab and alcohol. I don't suppose you'd reccommend a cleaning disk?

I'm not sure if the machine is from 2 or 3 Christmases ago, sure tho' that it was a few months before the 300 to 200 price drop.

I may just buy her an early Christmas gift of a new one if the cost of a repair is so near the same price. It would really be a gift to her and her brother, as he uses it a lot more than she does, so much so that he probably just plain wore it out. Not a complaint, they're good kids, having fun.

And everything IS throwaway today anyway, isn't it?

If I have to parts it out, I may ask you what I should ask for pieces.

    Thanks much.

    Cheers,

    George

  10. Well, I just saw this on TV tonight. If its a disk read error (maybe they think the laser is missing because it cant see the disk), then maybe just adjusting the laser could help.

    Here is the article:

And maybe PS2daddy can help you if you come across problems, as I know nothing about the PS2

Yes the alchol cleaning is possible you take off all 10 screws and then lift off the top tray be careful though. There is a cable that connects the reset button lift gently and disconnect the button/cable assembly from the top.
there are 4 screws that cover the cd tray after you take them off you can use a q-tip and swapb alchol on it.
    rub gently in circles

Also i recommend using 96% isopropyl alchol it doesnt smear like the lower percentage kind can.

If your disks are badly scratched then a disk doctor can often remedy those problems it grinds a new surface on the disk.

You can adjust the voltage potentiometers(pots) but this can often casue more damage than help if you dont adjust them correctly.
You can use a multimeter to get reeading on the resistance and make adjuments.

The cog / amizuth adjustment descibed in the post by solarjetman is easily reversible and wont damage anything but the only thing is that in an older ps2 you have to leave a ribbon cable unplugged in order to make this adjustment work the cable makes the cog readjust all the time.

A lot of people have prolbems in those earlier models the lasers just werent made very well most people that have the first models have laser reading issues (not all but a whole lot of people do)

    Hope that helps
