OK, I got my new dvd2onex today and I have a question.
While reading the Help file, I noticed that "Constant" was the preferred setting for long movies. Having always had it set to "Variable", I was surprised when it took 150% longer when set to "Constant". Is this the norm?

Yes. And constant rate usually gives better looking output, so I'd use that all the time.
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté." -

It depends on the way the source is encoded, your processor speed, HD speed, whether you're copying from one drive to another or to the same one, how much RAM you have, etc. There's no way to give an average that has much meaning to anyone else. I usually count about 1.5 - 2 hours per movie, unless it's slightly over 4.37 GB.

With the new version, I've noticed BIG improvements in speed, using constant, I've been getting just over two hours for a 7.6 gig flick, and that's with my little ol' G4 350!!! I'm loving it!!! 95% of the time, on a 32" WEGA, I still can't tell the difference between the copy and the original!
What an app! -
I agree. the constant vs variable was out with the previous version and i was shocked at how long it took! On my machine contstant took about 45min and now with 1.20 its back closer to about 30 min which is not to bad
overall im very impressed with this update -
there's been much discussion ad naseum elsewhere re: constant vs variable with no obvious conclusions... the dvd2one team did a very poor job of explaining which ratio should be used.
many people have offered tertimonials... from reading many long threads, it seems to me the consensus is use Variable for full diskcopy and Constant for movie only mode, especially long movies...
I was using Constant for everything until I noticed some nasty artifacts after a full diskcopy backup of my Six Feet Under Collection... i tried it with Variable and the results were much improved... i don't know why..
so I now follow the consensus... and I'm sure someone else will offer a testimonial that will contradict this...
either way, the app is great... though I kind of fancy a mac version of DVD Shrink.
