    Hello

First let me say that I've always used TMPGEnc Plus to do my MPEG-2 encoding but recently I tried CCE and here were my settings more or less:

SOURCE = NTSC 23.976fps Capture (decomb IVTC AviSynth script)

This is how I set up the VIDEO section in CCE:

Well I left the default stuff checked such as:

    1.) Add sequence end code
2.) Upper field first (even though progressive)

    I then checked:

    1.) DVD Video compliant
    2.) Close all GOPs

Changed luminance to 0-255 instead of default 16-235

For QUALITY I selected ZIGZAG (correct for PROGRESSIVE source as I understand it) and check marked PROGRESSIVE FRAME FLAG

Anyways afterwards I had a MPV file which I ran through PULLDOWN.EXE as follows:

    pulldown.exe filename.mpv filename.m2v

Then loaded the M2V into TMPGEnc DVD Author.

Right away I got an error about the GOP being too long.
Later when I went to COMPILE the project I got an error about the overall bitrate being too high but I did a 3-pass VBR with a MAX of 7900kbps and I was using 224kbps 2.0 AC-3 audio.

So what settings did I screw up with CCE to get these errors ?!?!?

Also I ignored ALL the errors and made the project anyway and I will be burning it tonight to test. The compiled files play fine off of the HDD using WinDVD and my Sigma Designs Hollywood + MPEG card.

So do I really have to worry? This movie (a LaserDisc capture) took me like 48 hours to encode !!!

I'd like to "do it right" from now on but I'd like to just use what I got for THIS project unless you guys think I'm really better off re-encoding it for the sake of compatability (image quality wise it looks VERY good).

Your bitrate is viewed as too high because you enabled the DVD compliant option. Really all this setting does is tag your nominal bitrate setting at 9800kbits. In most cases, software will think this is your max bitrate and give you bitrate errors. You should really never use the DVD compliant option. I think it is only useful when exporting to an mpg program stream.

For progressive footage in CCE, you should enable sequence end code, progressive frames, and zigzagg scan order. Never enable upper field first for progressive footage, unlike other encoders the field order setting in CCE DOES matter with progressive footage because of the way CCE reverses fields.

You got the GOP error because CCE's default GOP setting is not DVD compliant when using 23.976fps material. On the GOP tab set it to M=3, N/M=4. Also there is no reason to close GOPs when using CCE unless you are encoding multi angle footage. This will only decrease quality.

As far as the compatibility of your now burnt DVD...the bitrate is fine. In this regard, your DVD is still compliant and no dvd players should have problems playing it. As for the GOP length it is not compliant. Longer than supported GOPs put added strain on the decoder, and any given DVD player may or may not be able to play it without some playback errors. Whether or not its worth re-encoding and reauthoring is up to you.

Apparantly Womble Mpeg2vcr has an option to correct non-compliant GOPs without re-encoding. It just inserts additional I-Frames to split up the longer GOPs. This might be worth looking into, but I don't know if I'd necessarily trust Womble for this.

    Adam ...

    Thanks man you rule

I'm probably going to re-encode it

But now I know what to do!
