  1. Hey again everyone. Just thought I would share this. Found it kind of interesting.

    http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20031007/en_nm/media_bmg_protection_dc_6

I guess it was only a matter of time before some one broke the encryption. I guess that CD they released the new protection on was like 40 dollars or something.

Now tell me......who is going to buy a 40 dollar cd just to have that copy protection on it??

BTW: I do not advocate copy cds or any other illegal activity so don't think this post is trying to show how to get around it.

With that said, I believe there will never really be a way to keep piraters from copying cds. It seems whenever there is some kind of encryption people make it their duty to break it........hmmmmm, Technology to reverse Technology......funny world we live in.

  2. wow, thats probably the easiest and most user friendly way to copy a copy protected "music disc" (since most copy protected music discs cant be officially called a CD)..

is it really $40 for the disc?

and why would they even put the protection on the disc if it can be copied on linux & mac's?

    seems kinda retarded.

  3. Ya I do not remember the exact price but it was around 40 dollars. I read about this in yahoo awhile back when they said they were going to release this guys cd. Supposedly it had one disk that couldn't be copied and another that could be played only in a computer or something of that nature.......I don't remember the specifics. I gotta find that old topic and see if I can get my facts straightened out.

Also they admitted they knew about the shift technique......so why even release it as a new copy-right protection?

And now I hear the RIAA is outlawing the shift key so use your CAPS to make capital letters.
    :P :P :P

To make it look like they understand technology. You can eliminate the shift key hack by using the alternate hack. Simply set windows so that it never autoplays any disks!

What made me laugh was that they claimed they already new about the 'shift key' issue.
Yeah, okay, of course you did

  6. I am betting that right now, someone in the BMG technical department is getting roasted.

Just imagine that instead of wasting their money developing these anti-piracy technologies and instead either used it to (a) develop better content or (b) give a discount on the price of the CD how much better off they would have been right about now.

    Their idea of protection:

"SunnComm's technology is the most flexible version of CD copy-protection to hit the market yet. It includes "pre-ripped" versions of the songs on the CD itself, each of which can be transferred to a computer, burned to CD several times, or transferred to many kinds of portable devices. These differ from unrestricted MP3 files in that only limited copies can be made, and not every portable music device can play them.

The Anthony Hamilton CD is the first release in this new generation of copy-protected CDs that come preloaded with these "second session" tracks designed for use on a computer, a strategy also being pursued by SunnComm rival Macrovision. Record labels have pushed for these tracks, mostly provided in Microsoft's Windows Media format, to be included on copy-protected CDs in order to ameliorate consumers' concerns about not being able to use their music on computers.

SunnComm CEO Peter Jacobs said the technology--which will be improved in future versions--should still be attractive to record companies. Though simple, the act of holding down the Shift key in order to enable copying does let computer users know they're doing something unauthorized, he said. That alone will dissuade many people from making copies."

Sure it will. It will dissuade them from making copies from the MP3's on that disc, and instead they will rip from the first session without DRM.
    What a joke.

That's hilarious, how can he say that and keep a straight face?
These record companies spend millions of Dollars/Euros on copy-protection schemes and it's all for not,If I can hear it I can copy it.

This still has zero effect on Macs, and *nix machines. They are discriminating against windows users! Macs and *nix can copy 'til the cows come home without problems. But us poor windows users have to feel guilty about circumventing some lame copy protection? WTF is that all about?!?
