  1. Strange problem with TMPGEnc Author. I have captured two VHS tapes as MPEG 2 with Sonic My DVD. TMPGEnc Author will open VTS_01_1.VOB but if I try to open any other one I get this messege

"This is an illegal video file.
For DVD-Video you can only use the following video formats:

    MPEG-1 Video, MPEG-2 Video

TMPGEnc DVD Author does NOT have MPEG encoding abilities
AVI format(*.avi),RealMedia format(*.rm),WindowsMediaFile format(*.wmv, *.asf),etc. can only be used after they have been encoded to MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 format."

It seems to be telling me the other files are not MPEG 2 but of course they are. They were all captured as MPEG at the same time. Same thing with the second tape captured. I previously tried to re-author a DVD and ripped the VOBs and had the same result, only the first VOB would open so I don't think it has anything to do with the program it was captured with. I am new to this so I could be doing something wrong but if one opens why not the others? How could VTS_01_2.VOB be an illegal file if VTS_01_1.VOB opens? Why is this stuff all so weird? OK, that last one was rhetorical

  2. I think TMPGEnc will only "author" original content (probably to cut down on piracy Original content is like the MPEG1 or MPEG2 files you started with.
Another way to say this is: TMPGEnc is NOT a DVD ripping program.
To work with VOBs, you need to use a DVD ripping program - even on DVDs authored by TMPGEnc.

    Tmpgenc CAN import dvd-video.

Did you select Add dvd-video?? and select then the video_ts folder(or the folder with all ifo,bup and vob files). Don't open the vobs.

Hmm, the blind leading the blind, nothing you said is correct!
No offense meant, but true! I actually USE the program. Version 1.5 or above, not sure exact number.
Anyone can make a mistake, I do. But if you don't have a clue, don't try to make stuff up!

If you ever looked at Tmpgenc DVD author at all, you will see it does import DVD files! No it's not a ripping progam, you need the files on your hard drive, maybe DVD if not encrypted (DVD R/RW? )! They can be created with DVD author with original content of your own, or ripped from another DVD, doesn't matter (except maybe legally) how you got them.
(I have not tried a comercail disk, it might even do those, but I dought it)

Originall content has nothing to do with anything, and also is NOT mpeg1 or 2, it's anything you create yourself (Avi?) although DVd author only uses mpeg 1 2 or DVD.

Worth a second quote! Where did you ever come up with something like that??? You ONLY need a ripping program if you are ripping a COMERCAIL DVD that has copy protection!! Make your own that is not protected and you can use windows explorer to move and copy the files!! No ripping required! Just a straight copy!

As for the origanal post, use the second button to add DVD video
1/3 choose the VIDEO_TS folder your DVD is in. (on hard drive OR dvd)
2/3 select title (for me only one shows, I have only one movie here)
3/3 Choose to copy files to hard drive or read from DVD drive.
From DVD drive is very slow! This is on my smaller system though.

The Above is working that way right now on a original DVD -r I made before. Now I am copying the video files to the hard drive and that also works well!
This is my own DVD -R, not a Comercail and protected disk!!

Also you can work with the DVD files that are on the hard drive already. I just tested the DVD disk methode, and it works fine here. Not something I normally do. Most my work is off the hard drive, and my own mpeg2 files.

DVD author does have very good help files also.
