Hi,
First of all I have done a search and can't seem to come up with the answer. The problem is I have an avi file and a subtitle file. Now how in the world do I process the two to create an mpeg? What program or programs do I use. Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers, Carol

Possibly ffmpegX. That has divx to MPG capabilities and can accept subtitle files, but I'm not sure it can combine divx video and subtitle files. It's worth a shot though. Anybody else know about that?
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté." -
I've done it a few times. Some DivX are converted ok others have audio sync problems even when I'm using the same settings.
This is what i do:
• Quick Presets: hi-bitrate DVD (Pal)
• Filters Tab: Click "Load Subs" and chose the subs file
• Options Tab: Chose "decode with mplayer" instead of the default "decode with Quicktime".
mplayer is the only one who "burns" the subs into the video.
• Go to sleep and check the results next morning.
This is the only way i know of and has one (small) drawback: the subs are not normal DVD subtitles that can be turned on or off. Insted they were "burned" onto the video stream.
Hope this help.

Pepe - The instructions you gave are for making a (PAL) DVD, when what Carol was trying to make is a MPEG1 video of it. I'd say try the VCD preset if you want to make an MPG, though I'm not sure ffmpegX can make VCDs with subs, but I guess you'll find out. You'll want to make a NTSC video, not PAL, unless you're located in Europe, or some other PAL playing region.

You are right. When I read MPEG i assumed MPEG2, not 1.
(VCD, why on Earth would i make shuch a compressed movie??)
I never tried that with MPEG1 so i can't tell you if it works.
Regarding PAL... sorry but since I'm European that's the normal for me!

Oh, yeah . . . that last comment was directed to Carol, not to you; sorry about the confusion. Carol, let us know how this turns out. I'd be interested if what you are describing is possible.

Is there enough physical "space" to generate/burn a subtitle file to an existing SVCD file and burned to a 700mb CD? Or does it have to only be a DVD-sized file?

The way ffmpegX handles subs is to 'burn' them into the video, so they are a part of the image, and can't be turned on or off. If it will let you use the SVCD MPEG 2 video stream as a source to encode with the subtitle stream once you've demuxed the mpg, then you could do that, and make an SVCD from the output using the m2v video stream, mp2 audio, and subtitle file as sources. I think, however, that you'll have to decode the video from MPEG 2 into another video format like DV or divx or something so that ffmpegX can use it as a source. I have ZERO experience doing SVCD encoding with any tool, let alone ffmpegX, so you might want some confirmation from someone who has done this before. Anybody? To get back to your question, though, adding subtitles to the video stream shouldn't increase the final size significantly, and so you should be able to burn it back to SVCD.
