TMPEG running mega mega slow..why?

It usually takes around 2-3 hours to encode a full 90min movie from a divx/avi to mpeg/vcd ,

but at the moment it's been encoding all night(8 hours) and it's only half done, i did a search couldn't find much info.

The movie is an xvid and not the usual divx, could this be why its slow, or do i have something set wrong, i followed the guides in vcdhelp.

heres my specs

1.8ghz p4 512mg laptop.

EDIT: the movies just finished.......but 56mins into the new mpeg the picture turns black for the rest of the film, but audio is ok.the picture is fine in the avi?

Probably not. An XviD shouldn't take longer than a DivX, but this sounds like a "bad frame" AVI. Use VirtualDub MP3 Freeze to search for and delete bad frames before encoding to mpg. (AVI file players mostly survive these bad spots with grace - not so when it comes to the encoder! This leads many to believe that they have a perfect AVI (because they can play it fine in WMP) when in fact it is not.)

Hi mate thanks for the reply, i did a repair and removed the bad frames with vdub but now the audio is out of sync....hows that?

Happens all the time. Unfortunately. Downloaded AVIs are a pain, and if they aren't perfect to start with (not many are), it'd have to be a very special movie, if it's worth battling with. In short - give it up, and go out and rent the damned thing.
If you really want do dig further, there's some guides on the subject of removing bad frames, left.
