  1. Okay I plan on getting a DVD Burner for my computer within the next year(waiting for prices to drop) and I want to back up my VHS tapes that aren't on DVD and probably never will be(trust me I have a lot) well any way what are the best capturing devices?

I don't want to spend more than $250

I don't care how it connects to the computer either USB, FireWire or a capture card

I don't need to do serious editing I may want to add a trailer or photo gallery for the movie I'm making

How will the quality be? Like will it be as good as the VHS tape itself?

If you guys could provide links then I to the products you recommend I would apperciate it.

Thanks for looking at my topic and helping a newb out

If those are commercial tapes, you will have to
add something for removing the wonderful
    Macrovision.

  3. You might also want to consider a stand alone DVD recorder.

  4. I'll second the the getting a standalone dvd recorder and also getting a macrovision remover (if the vhs tapes have them). You'll also want to get a dvd recorder with TBS. A standalone that I have used is the panasonic E20. What you might want to do is get some DVDRW's and record onto the dvdrw, then rip it to you computer, then do your editing and then do you authoring and burning.

If you go the other route, your great grandkids will be finishing your projects as you will need to cap, convert, and then do everything else. If you are a quality freak, then you'll keep redoing them. Do yourself a HUGE favor and get a standalone.

The Canopus ADVC-100 is one of the highest rated capture devices and will defeat macrovision.

  6. I'm sure that my VHS tapes don't have Macrovision as they come from the 80s and early 90s.

As far as a standalone I don't think I want to go that route yet as I want to get the DVD Burner on my computer to also back up my files.

Thanks for the current input right now. Oh I don't think I have to worry about my "great grand children" finishing my projects as I'm only 20 lol
