The DMR-E80 can only copy files in high speed at 1x. It does a high speed dub from HDD to DVD-R in 54 minutes, if the file (program) being dubbed takes up a whole DVD-R (about 4400 megs, with overhead). This is regardless of disk write speed rating (it's the same for all of the 1x, 2x and 4x media I have tried).
Copying files to DVD-RAM takes 27 minutes (half the time).
The DMR-E100 can do a high speed dub to DVD-R at up to 4x, and that is one of the differences between the models.
For the E80, there is no advantage to 4x or 2x media in terms of actual dubbing speed, although some of the "faster" media may turn out to be more reliable. For example, I have had better luck with TDK 2x than with some brands of 1x, but I think that is a function of quality control rather than burn speed rating. Also, the Japanese Fuji disks seem to be more consistently reliable than the Taiwan-made ones, and they seem to be available only in 4x now.

  5. I am under the impression that Memorex media works quite well with Panny recorders???

  6. We have an 80 here and I am pretty certain that the speed is at least 2X, and may be determined by the DVD-r stock that you buy.

Presently we are using the 4X stock but have not had an opportunity to transfer a job from the harddrive to a DVD platter since we changed from 2X to 4X.
