  1. OK, a fundamental newbie question. I have been reading various posts and guides getting ready to convert VHS to DVD. I have installed recommended codecs and read guides about choosing the right codec but how do you use codecs? I know the definition, compression /decompression, but are codecs programs? When I click on settings-add/remove programs they show up there so that function sees them as programs. When I capture with my Canopus ADVC-100 and Scenelizer how do I use a codec? I've read a number of things about what codecs do but I've never seen anything as straight foreword a exactly how to use them. What fundamental bit of knowledge am I missing?

in your capture software, you should find a preferences or settings area where you can define which codec to use.

in Virtualdub, it's under Video->Compression. In iuVCR, it's under the Video tab, with a drop-down list.

if it's a codec like the PicVideo MJPEG, where you can have varying quality levels, you should have a "configure" option after you select the codec.

  3. Thanks Housepig, as stated I'm useing Canopus ADVC-100 and Scenelizer. I was just looking through Scenelizer's options and I still don't see where to select a codec.

I'm not familiar with Scenealyzer, so I can't help you... I'd suggest a new thread with a more descriptive title, like "how to choose codec in Scenealyzer" and see if some guru can give you the tip...

I believe the ADVC converts your footage to DV, it has a built-in DV codec. Your software should merely transfer that directly to your PC via the firewire port.

You shouldn't have to choose a codec unless you wish to convert it to some other type.
