    Hi,

Whats the best thing for de-interlacing a video? I am using Virtual Dub and I don't like duplicating a field because the image is jagged, blurring the fields together can be a bit of a pain in high movement scenes. Is there a good filter that I am not using?

Any help on this topic would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

First, just to be positive, are you sure you want to deinterlace? Will you never be watching on TV, only PC?

If yes to PC only, which filter are you currently using in VirtualDub?

  3. The orignal posters location is England (ie. PAL). There are only two times you want to de-interlace: when encoded/converted to VCD or when encoded/converted to a PC video file (eg. divx/xvid). For all MPEG2 encodes (SVCD/CVD or DVD) there is no need to deinteralce as MPEG2 supports interlaced source.

A lot of PAL video is true interlaced is just is not meant to be de-interlaced, so I'd recommend encoded to MPEG2. As for films, US films are shot at 23.976fps progressive but once converted to PAL... again I'd recommend aginst de-interlacing if at all possible.

If you arr trying to de-interlace a true interlaced PAL source there will be artifiacts.

Sorry I should have said what I am trying to de-interlace. It's a DVD I got imported from the US. It's region 0 but it's in the NTSC format with a frame rate of 29.97 fps. I am trying to back it up onto DivX but the video is interlaced. I originally used DVDx and used the interpolorate feature to de-interlace but I didn't like the results DVDx gave me so I am now using VirtualDubMod. The only deinterlace filter I have tried using in VirtualDub is the basic one.

Ah, I see. Well, there are other filters out there that you could try on a small portion of the video to test which results you like best.

I used to have a big filter resource site bookmarked, but lost track of it. Sorry.

But a search, Google or other, for "Virtualdub filters" should help you track down all that are available.

    Good luck. :c)

added: try here first - http://neuron2.net/

Look first in "Mine" then go to "Other" from the menu on the left on that page. Loads of links.

Thanks for that link. I am gonna as many as I can out to see which is best. 8)

1 other thing. Which re-size filter is the best to use? I prefer using a program called DVDx but when I use any of the resize filters it makes the image slightly blurred if you know what I mean. When I see other peoples DivX movies they are super sharp.

You're welcome for the links. :c)

About resizing, I never use that, so I couldn't say what's best.

If no one else spots your question here today or tomorrow, maybe you should start a new topic "best resize filter for Vdub".

But this thread is getting a lot of views, so you may get an answer here. :c)

Good luck with it all. :c)

What do you do instead of using a resize filter? I don't think there is an option to turn it off in DVDx. When I say resize filter I mean either BiLinier, BiCubic etc.

OH :c) I do nothing. I'm not converting to Divx and I work with DVD ready sizes/specs.

I just have a lot of Vdub filters to use on my files when necessary, but I've never had the need to resize at all. Unless it's for overlays, menus, etc., and I do that within my vid editing apps. :c)
