I tried my first DVD backup using DVD Shrink 2.3 (or whatever the version is). After going through the compression choices, etc., to get the right size I hit the backup button. After about 43% I got an error message that DVD Shrink couldn't finish. I was advised to upgrade to the newer DVD Shrink. The same thing happened. Does DVD Decrypter give you the same options to shrink the DVD to a size that will fit before decrypting? Thanks.

Hello Nubey.
"After about 43% I got an error message that DVD Shrink couldn't finish."
Do you have enough free and defragmented space on your hard-drive?
Could you let us know what the error message is/was?
"Does DVD Decrypter give you the same options to shrink the DVD to a size that will fit before decrypting?"
Nope, DVD Decrypter is mainly a ripper, not a shrinker. -
Hey ddlooping,
Thanks for your response. I have a 120GB HDD (with 105GB free) so I don't think that could be the problem.
The error message I encountered was in v2.3 which I don't have anymore. The message in the newer version was not explained, it just said that it couldn't go further.
Maybe I'll try another compressor software and see if that works.
Thanks again. -
You're welcome.
Well, if you still want to give DVD Shrink a go, just let me know.
(we will need some details about your system, drives, etc etc) -
ddlooping,
When I try to use DVDshrink beta 5 on a DVD that I create with Tmpgenc DVD Author it often stops durring the first analysis and tells me that it cannot decrypt the vob. When that happens I always use DVD shrink 2.3 which works with no problem. Are you aware of problems with DVD shrink and Tmpgenc DVD Author and why would beta 5 have trouble and not 2.3?
(To clarify, this problem occurs right after I open the disk when DVD shrink goes thru it's first quick analysis of the Disk. -
Hello presto.
This is a known issue that dvdshrink (the author/developer) will hopefully address soon. -
Thank You,
I'm curious though. Is it a known issue with Tmpgenc DVD Author or is it just something that happens with any Authoring program sometimes? -
You're welcome.
It has been reported for other authoring proggies I think, but it's hard to tell where the fault lies (?). -
Good Morning ddlooping,
Here is what I have:
2.4GHz P-IV (Asus P4S8X)
512MB DDR
120GB 7200RPM Maxtor (plus 40GB 7200RPM Maxtor)
Pioneer DVDR-106D
Pioneer DVD-120S
The thing is last night I tried another DVD (121 minutes vs 107 minutes)
and DVD Shrink (newer version) automatically shrunk it and put it on my
HDD in just over 6 minutes. Then I burned with Nero in about 16 minutes.
Thank you. -
Hello Nubey.
Here is the culprit: Pioneer DVD-120S.
Many DVD-backupers have reported having problems with it, whether they use DVD Shrink, CloneDVD or other softwares.
http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=22802
(two posts about the Pioneer 120)
It doesn't happen all the time but often enough to be a nuisance.
When the problem occurs, try ripping with your Pioneer DVDR-106D. -
I think there is a definite incompatibility between tmpgenc dvd author and dvd shrink. Nothing I author in tmpgenc can be read by dvd shrink, but if I author in DWS, it works fine.

Never get this error with DVD shrink 2.3
