I believe the three branch symbol you are talking about means USB, not fire wire. Anyway, to put VHS video on your computer to use the USB port, you have several options.
-- If you have a video camera with a pass through function, you can use it to connect your VCR to your computer. Not the best captures you can get though.
-- If you purchase a hardware encoder like ADS IDVD, it will also connect to your computer's USB port and it will accept your VCR and camera RCA and S-video inputs and put them on your computer.
-- You can also purchase a video capture card, which lets you plug your VCR video directly into your computer. They start around $30, and is usually a good place to start at.
-- The pricier solutions involves analog to digital converters, which is a little box like the USB hardware endoders along with a true fire wire card, it converts your video in DV, which takes up a lot of room on your system, but gives a very good image. The two most popular ones around here are the DAC-100 and the ADVC-100.
Anyway, read the beginner's articles to get you started, as you will find most of your answers to your questions there.
