  1. if have discs that are dvd5 & not encrypted, can I just tell Shrink or whatever ripper I use to rip them to my drive that holds the burner, ie not to the harddisc. what would happen, is this the same as burning. My guess is probably not but can anyone advise, thanks

You shouldn't even need to use a ripper or shrinker for those. They can just be copied over -as is.

But I'd only do it to hard drive first. I don't know how/if you can copy right to DVD.
    There's no place like 127.0.0.1

  3. You mean can you do an on the fly disc to disc copy? The short answer is yes, but for a lot of reasons people don't recommend this, esp if you plan to burn at full speed. It's a LOT of data being transferred and any 'bump' can result in errors.

    Better to use DVD Decrypter:

    1) Choose "Mode | ISO - Read" and rip iso image to HD
    2) Choose "Mode | ISO - Write" select image and burn to disc

You can rip (at least on my lite-on 166s) a full DVD5 disc unencrypted in ~5min or less. So it's not a huge time lost.
