  1. Is it possible to convert VOB files into another, more compact format? I ripped the video right from the DVD, but after the fact I realized it was quite big. It's about 7GB and I'd like to get it down to 1/2, or maybe even 1/4 of that size. Any programs that would do this?

  3. I'd just like it to be a smaller file. I don't neccessarily want to be able to burn it to DVD / CD later. So whatever format keeps it small, but with good/great quality. MPEG-4 ? AVI ? I'm not sure which format is good. So I guess I need a way to convert it to one of those two.

I'd say avi...look at the guides on the left to figure out how.

  5. Not avi, sounds like you want to encode to one of the many MPEG4 codecs (eg. divx, xvid, asf, etc). Many of the MPEG4 codecs have the *.avi extension but are not avi's (MS standard uncompressed video). Anyway, if you're a total newbie you might want to take a look at Gordian Knot:

You can d/load the software package and find guides for it there as well as it's own discussion group. Reducing the resolution to 520x390 or so at 500kbit/s produces pretty good quaility back ups often < 700 MB.
