I took it my senior year...and most of it was multiple choice. There's one math section in which you have to work the problems out.

It was still that way 8 years ago, when I took the test. I bet it's going to go electronic within the next 5-10 years.

They only partially count towards your university eligibility though, for that we have OP (overall position) scores that take into account your grades from years 11 and 12 as well as how your school as a whole went on the QCS.
    Do you live in NSW?

If so, the system must have changed totally since I went through the process (7 years ago). Back then we had the TER score (out of 100) which was a composite of the units you sat for the HSC (higher school certificate) and was calculated with a lot of mathematical fiddling. In any case, the TER was mean to represent your "rank" in the cohort of entrants (e.g., if you got a TER of 90.00 it meant that you did better than 90% of entrants).

  5. Queensland is where I live/went to school.

I think it varies between states the system they use so it probably is the same as when you went through. I know that HSC is the equivelent of QCS.

OP's are from 1-25, 1 being the best (top 2%), 25 the worst (bottom 2%).

Right, although it sounds like its only for maths. What age do you take SATs at? I don't remember any multiple choice in maths at O level, has this been introduced with GCSEs?

It's not only math...its math and verbal(english). There isnt any specific age requirement. Most people take it their junior or senior year(11th and 12th grade respectively). The general age group is between 17-18 years but there are always exceptions(like me) who are ahead.

Do you not have proper written exams? I know that English O Levels here were divided up into two full written papers. This would be for 16 year olds. A Level student exams are taken at 18.

No, SATs dont have a written section but ISTEP does. It's an easier verion of the SATs and it's mandatory to take it sophmore(10th grade) year. SATs are just multiple choice.

I took the SAT one year out of high school just so I would have it on my record and I scored 1600, so both scores were the same. I can see how the verbal portion would be lower as it seemed like a lot of answers could have been left to interpretation. Math is pretty absolute with its answers.

The ACTs were more important to schools near me. I did 34 on that, perfect on math and English, something else on science and reading. I just hate to read and reason on a time limit
