  1. I bet I got your attention huh!

Actually I do, but not what you think!
I have about a 84 firebird I lost the ignition key for. It's a beat up car with a great engine I bought for parts. Tranny is bad. Anyway I want to move the car! If I had the key it would start and run great and the tranny works long as I don't go over 20mph so I can drive it across the yard. But without a key the steering is locked, so I can't even drag it now.

I could get it running fine without the key, but still the steering would still be locked! I live in the middle of nowhere, 15 miles to the nearest little town.

So any idea's how to get the switch out without busting anything? I will most likely fix this car or keep some stuff and sell the rest for parts, so I don't want to bust up anything!

If I could find the key it would be easy to take out the switch of course, but then I would not need too

    Catchey title huh?

Oh yea, the fast part means in days, not minutes! I got plenty of time, but would like to move it this weekend!

    Thanks!

if you're willing to replace the key switch, get a fat screwdriver, jam it in there and turn.

my neighbor had a former tenant abandon a car in his driveway, that's how we got it to steer to get it out on the street. (then we stripped the plates off of it.... it was towed a few days later.)

don't know enough about cars to know if it will work for yours, but it certainly did the trick on this one (late 80's Toyota, IIRC)

  3. Ahhhhh a fellow F-Body owner huh.

    94 Camaro here.

Although you have a firebird and not a camaro, they are both F-bodies and both came out of St. Therese, Canada.

The best advice for me to give you would be to go to www.camaroz28.com

Go to the forums and do a search. If nothing comes up, post really quick. These guys are brilliant when it comes to Camaros and Firebirds. They have a forum for all generations so this shouldnt be a problem. Alot of the members probably have the same car you do. Good Luck and let us know how it goes.

  4. Thanks

    I'll check out the link.
Yea I don't mind if I needed to replace the key cyclinder, or just leave it out (parts car really) just don't want to break the column. It's good.
Otherwise I could just yank it out with my dent puller, but last car I did that too broke the housing for the switch.

I have alot of cars sitting here, I seldom get rid of any, just get another and park the one I was driving. And I buy clunckers too if it's something I want for parts. Normally I never lose a key, but some how I lost 3 this year!
I've got 3 mercuries for parts for my 84, 85 T-birds and an 87 Couger. Mechaniclly the same, bodies different. All same engines!
