    Just curious...

    P.S.
    Script kiddies, participants of DOS attacks, users of mailbombers/WinNuke programs, need not reply. Lamers.

  4. Yes, there are Hackers, OUT THERE, somewhere in a far far away universe traveling at the speed of light entering your machine right now.

  6. Maybe I'm an old man but back when I was getting into computers the term 'hacker' wasn't really a bad thing.

    Sure, some of us ... er, them ... did unscroupulous things with thier computer skills, but hackers aren't just about breaking into computers. Generally, these dorks are called crackers.

    Sure, people can break into your computer ... but there's more money in preventing everyone else from breaking into company computers. and less jail time. Whom do you think invented the firewall, dreamed up IP chains and tables, proxies, and multicasting ... hackers did. And they keep it running too ...

    rasch,
    thats the definition of "hacker" that I meant. I wasnt really implying "crackers". Hackers - people with the knowledge how to, but dont do, illegal activities. But then you get the grey area: A hacker/cracker cross breed, people that stray on the illegal side, but for the intent of good. Like cracking boxes just to "fix" the flaws in its security. Or people that nuke kiddie porn sites/spammers.
    Most crackers today are just script kiddies, running canned programs that do it all for them. Or the people that scan mass IPs just to find vunerable windoze boxes with an open port 139. Then "crack" some poor dudes Win9x box and trash the HD - Lamers with enough rope to hang themselves. hehe.
    Hackers have had a lot of bad press mainly due to the media, I wish that they would properly distinguish hackers from crackers. If there were no hackers, then the internet wouldnt be what it is today.
    Personally speaking, I have never used my knowledge to do bad. I could have broken into a million Win9x boxes, but for what? Its no real challenge and besides, Im a nice guy . Ive "accidently" recovered one or two password lists but never even bothered to crack them. I know enough to know that its not easy to avoid getting busted when you start cracking. Anyway, its far more fun to hunt down spammers/kiddie porn sites and snuff them out like the vermin they are... hehe...

    My favorite thing to do back in the NetBus days was to replace peoples' startup, shutdown, safe to shut down screens, and their startup sounds with some crazy stuff, then reboot them!

    Adding this to the Win9x system.ini file is a good little trick...
    Open c:\windows\system.ini with notepad.
    In the [boot] section at the top of the file where it says "shell=explorer.exe"
    ...change it to...
    shell=progman.exe

    When they reboot they are confronted with the old Win 3.1 Program Mangaer. hehe
    (To revert back to the explorer shell, just open the file again with notepad and re-edit)
