First of all, I have yet to see any content distributed in the Matroska A/V container. Second, what is the advantage of this over, say, the open QT A/V container .mov (a freely available and published spec), which is also the basis for the .mp4 container standard, or even the OGG container, which works swell for A/V and text (for subs)? But if you want to play Matroska files back in OS X, you'll need the latest version of Mplayer for MacOS X, available here: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/mplayerosx/MPlayerOSX2b5.dmg?download. More info on this release here. It seems, however, that the tools for making MKV files are for linux and Windows only at this point, though they are open sourced, and can be made to work in OS X with a lot of pain and effort. Why bother making new content that no one can play (and no one's heard of) yet anyways?
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté."

Its much better than OGM. With lots of audio and subtitle capabilities. I have the program for PC, but VPC takes a hell of a long time to make them.

    also, Matroska supports menus.

I inquired about this several months back and no one knew anything about it.

It is the "ideal" mpeg 4 container format in the sense that it closely resembles DVD for functionality, but alas, no one cares. not yet. Its easier to make a DVD that works.

very true, i was also experimenting with mov, but the subtitle playback was too hard to get clear, and at the bottom of he screen.

Just gotta wait for someone to make a matroska package.
