  1. I wasn't sure what forum this would go under so im posting it here. On one of the official pay per view movie sites, they let you download a film and watch it for 24 hours before it deletes. Thats fine, but is their anyway i could just take this and re-encode it to whatever WITHOUT having to be online so windows media player can "check" the license so i can play it to begin with?

i have tried something like this before with a wma file and i had to be online so it could validate the license in order for it to work. I tried the same file in several apps with no luck till i went online with it.

I know i could easily run it out of the pc and record it that way, but i would rather encode it over to mpg2. thanks

This would be stealing and we don't want to go there. Take your topic to another site please.

  3. Not really, im still paying for the film (after you pay you get to dl it), then how about this:

I just do not want to have to be online each time within that 24hrs i want to watch the film. So is their a way to watch it without being online so it doesnt have to renew the license for that reason

this topic falls into the same ones as people asking about downloading quicktime/etc other file formats of shorts or trailers online (ususally using one of those apps that "copy" on line streaming formats and then saving them on your pc), and then asking about converting them, and thats practically what i am asking.

Hell theirs even a guide that was just put up recently about saving online streaming formats to your pc using graphedit and in a majority of cases, without the sites permission your getting them from. If they wanted you to save them they would allow it, but most don't so you use methods like the above mentioned guide to get them-- i guess thats stealing too , but no one seems have a problem with it

Okay maybe I was confused. You did mention, encoding it over to MPEG. From what I know, these sites allow you to download, but not for keeps. Or am I wrong?

  5. correct, kind of like renting, i edited my post above and changed some info, so forget the stealing route for now, as i covered that in my above post and quite a number of things on this site are in violation. So lets put all of that aside:

You pay like 2.99 for a film, you have 30 days to watch it, but once you play it, you then have 24 hours to keep it. After the 24 hours the file deletes itself. The site did say it was ok to burn onto cd/dvd and such but i guess you still have that time frame. Normally if that was the only problem i have ways around this. But since it is now done with wmv 9, they put a "license" on it. So if i go and double click it while being offline it will not open (in any app). Once i go online and double click it goes to validate the license so i can view it. The problem is then, that i do not want to be online just so i can watch it within the 24 hours. I do not have a
problem with it self destructing, but i should not have to be online to watch it, and if it was paid for...

Hmm i was curious i might try one method-- be online get the stupid validate so i can view it, but i dont view it, i then throw it in tmpg (or some other app) and see if it will encode it from there, once encoding starts i then sign offline--see if that works--post later--

  6. Was that a brainstorm or what!

  7. Not all that much on this site actually violates the rules of the site!
Discusing how to take a 24 hr rental and disable the lisence scheme is pretty much a violation I would think! There is a big difference in OWNING a movie and making a backup (Permited by copyright laws) or renting a movie! Copyright laws permit various things as fair use if you own the product. Copy PROTECTIONS violate YOUR rights under copyright laws, if you own it!

When you rent in any form, you do not own it! Therefore you do not have the right to make a legal backup copy!

Not that I care what you do at home, have at it! That 24hrs is crap, but if you don't like it don't support them by renting it in the first place! Go to Netflix and get real DVDs, 0r Blockbuster, or your local grocery store!

Watch those whenever you want however you want! On the pc, setop player whatever. And don't get locked into WINDOWS MEDIA CRAP in the first place!

Also as far as downloading files being discused here, there ARE many files that are public domain, or people like I make them, and though they are not public domian, are aloughed to be freely downloaded and do whatever with! So yea, if I put my files on streaming media, and someone wants a perminant copy there is nothing wrong with them capturing it and making a real disk if they want! But THEY have to figure out how to do it!

I personanally am working on a magic video at present. When it is done I will be selling it! As part of the ways to advertise it I will be puttng clips online in streaming form. Also some of the files will be on Kazza, morpheus, winmx, and any other p2p and file sharing system I can find to put them on! An entire illusion as on my DVD and it is free to download and keep or share with others! I own all rights to it! I can grant those rights to others. I can stop you from selling it also! Or including it with anyone elses works!
It is not public domain, but is free to use and share!
But NOT the DVD itself! That is not free to distribute or share! Though I am sure some people will, and I dought I will care that much, unless I catch someone actually selling copies!

Hell theirs even a guide that was just put up recently about saving online streaming formats to your pc using graphedit and in a majority of cases, without the sites permission your getting them from. If they wanted you to save them they would allow it, but most don't so you use methods like the above mentioned guide to get them-- i guess thats stealing too , but no one seems have a problem with it
No that's often not stealing! Like I said about my files! I'll have a site up and running and a few streaming formats. I have NO plans to put download links on those files because I want people to come to my site to view the files and hopefully BUY the dvd! But if you want those files I put up, then by all means keep them if you can! Even give them to your friends! That is perfectly LEGAL since I own all rights I can say so!
Maybe they will come to my site to view more latter and buy my DVD! The files I put on p2p will have the site name and the info about more FREE streaming files! Not all files will be on P2P though. Not all DVD files will be streaming either. And the info on how to build the props and do the illusions will ONLY be on the DVD!

Now if you rent the DVD from me and make your own copy THAT is illegal!
If you buy the DVD from me and make a backup copy for your own personal use, THAT is legal!

If you are making a copy and don't tell how you got it, well we assume you are doing it legally when you ask how!

Of course I won't have that MS media crap involved though!

What you are asking IS a violation of the board rules. I suggest you ask a forum more tuned to what your asking for this question. On the same note, unless something major has happened recently I *Think* the answer is No, there is not a way to do it.

MS Keeps your software very updated DRM wise... if you can play the file then your updated its that simple.
